Working with Stacks of more than 500 photos results in Lightroom hanging and runaway cpu usage

I have seen previous posts similar to this issue, but no recent posts.  When working with a set of time-lapse photos, stacking in LR becomes unresponsive and eventually hangs.  It is necessary to force-quit LR and restart.  Sometimes after the restart, the photos show stacked, but this is not consistent.

Steps to re-create:
1. Import 1000 photos
2. Close the Metadata panel.  Close the Right panel.
3. In Grid view, either with Expanded or Compact cells, Select 1000 photos
4. Group photos into stack

Result
Memory and cpu usage increase dramatically
LR becomes unresponsive
LR must be shutdown
Restart LR
In some cases, the photos show stacked, but in others they do not.  this is inconsistent

System:
MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012)
2 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB RAM
(I have reproduced on a 2015 Macbook Pro 2015 Retina Core i5 with 8GB RAM)

LR
LR CC 2015.4 Build 1060496

Thank you for the help.
