Photoshop: Wild brush strokes

I use Photoshop for Painting, and recently bought CS5 to upgrade from CS3. I find that the brush on CS5 continously goes out of control and either fails to make a brush-stroke (two or three failures per every ten strokes), and then later the failed strokes appear somewhere else on the page. Thus I get marks appearing all over the place, where I don't want them. Often I cannot find them and they appear later as I manipulate layers.
Sometimes the brush creates a "wild" straight line that goes right across the page. If the opacity is low, I may not see this, and thus the final image is spoiled. This syndrome occurs with the lassoo tool, which also goes wild periodically and makes lines I did not intend. I have checked and upgraded my graphics card and have disabled Open Gl, but this makes no difference. None of the above occurred in CS3.

Which OS?

Have you installed all the updates for Photoshop?

Do you have a tablet or a mouse with a custom driver? And is that driver up to date?

So far we've only seen this happen with out of date drivers for tablets and mice, plus a couple of broken mice :-).

I am using Windows 7 and have a new and fairly powerful computer. I use a Wacom tablet and a mouse, both new, and the problem exists for both. I will check the drivers and ensure all updates are installed, and then see if this cures the problem.
Right now CS5 is unusable for painting and I continue to use CS3 which is fine with both mouse and tablet. Henry.

Try using a mouse instead of the tablet (and make sure the stylus is far from the tablet) and see if that is also a problem.

If it's a tablet driver or hardware problem, then Wacom should be able to help you pretty quickly.

Will do. Thanks for the advice. I will test all eventualities, and report back. I would be surprised if no-one else experiences this problem. It is a strange phenomenon, but my system really is about as normal as you can get. I feel there must be a particular sensitivity in CS5 that wasn't there in CS3, where I use exactly the same tools but with no adverse effects. Henry

It's Henry again, after a few months of testing, trying and cajoling my CS5 to behave.
Sadly I am still suffering from the same problem. I have checked the entire hardware system (Dell Latitude which has 250 GB Hard Disc and 4 MB RAM) and the Graphics card (NVIDIA NVS 4200M Driver Version 285.62).
The operating system is Windows 7 Professional. I have two new Mice with new drivers and both have not cured the problem. I have a new Wacom tablet and same problem there. So it's not those items causing the problem.
My IT advisor reckons the system is pretty standard and demonstrates no particular glitches. Photoshop CS3 works perfectly in all respects (I use it mainly as a painting, retouching and photo montage/painting medium).
Photoshoip CS5 works perfectly, so far except for two key problems.
1. The Wild Brushes, mentioned before.
2. The habit of telling me I don't have enough RAM to save a document, when clearly I do. I often do a save after a couple of trial brush-strokes to make sure it isn't going to catch me out later. Sometimems it does. Sometimes it doesn't.

My colleagues who use AutoCAD all the time tell me their CAD systems went erratic when our office was converted to Windows 7. Constant crashing and refusal to save.

Is it possible that there is an incompatibility between Windows 7 and Photoshop CS5?

Any thoughts would be welcome. Nobody else suffering from this?

Others tend to track it down to a bad tablet or driver.

The out of RAM when saving is also very odd. That really shouldn't be happening.

And Photoshop CS5 works just fine on Windows 7. There's something odd about your setup, or something that you're doing to put it in a bad state (not intentionally).

Do you have any third party plugins in Photoshop CS5? If so, have you tried disabling them?

I don't think it's the Tablet or Driver as both are new and work perfectly with Photoshop CS3 and CS5 Illustrator.

If there's something odd with my set-up or something I am doing wrong, it certainly doesn't affect my work in CS3 which works perfectly. That doesn't mean I'm not doing something odd to put it in a bad state, but I'm flummoxed to know what that might be as all other programmes I use are fine.

A new glitch has just appeared which now closes Photoshop 5 as soon as I open it saying "there is a problem and Photoshop has to close". That is awkward when I am needing to get on with some work. No such problem with Photoshop CS3. This glitch happens each and every time, so CS5 is currently unusable.

I don't have any third party plug-ins in Photoshop CS5 that I know of ( I haven't installed any).

So no closer to a solution.

It may help if we can could see your Photoshop System Info:

Launch Photoshop. Choose Help>System Info...

Note: Photoshop System Info contains and entry with your serial number. Remove the entry prior to posting your System Info on this public forum.

All attempts to send this info has failed as my Photoshop CS5 has decided not to allow me to open it saying " A problem has caused Photoshop CS5 to stop working and has to close" I have tried many times today, and opened and closed the computer but to no avail.

I will try again tomorrow and see if she is in a better mood. I think she hates me.

I have reinstalled the Photoshop CS 5 as it had stopped working, as mentioned. As directed I attach the System Info. We have cleaned up my computer's overall system (Dell Latitude)and double checked Graphics card (NVIDIA NVS 4200M), bought a new quality mouse (Microsoft Comfort 6000) and the Wild Brush continues. All else works perfectly. Sad thing is I mainly need Photoshop for Painting, hence the fuss.
Oops! Just re-opened Photoshop to check Open GL status (should be off) and it told me "Photoshop has stopped working" and closed me down.
There's a real Gremlin in there somewhere.

Hello Henry,
Did you ever fix the wild strokes issue? I've been fighting the same problem with CS5.

No I have not solved the problem yet. I am now waititng for a response from Adobe who have asked me to send my system details. To date my Computer diagnostic indicates perfect order. My Video Card also perfect. My Mouse high performance and new. My capacity ample. My technique tested on the same CS5 on other computers using Windows Vista works no problem. The only missing part of the equation is Windows 7. Most of my colleagues and advisors think it may be an instability between Windows 7 and CS5. Windows 7 is also suspected of making some AutCAD versions unstable.
It's not only the wild brush, but a habit of closing the programme down when I open it up, and a refusal to save, saying I don't have enough RAM, when clearly I do.
Some gremilins that need investigating. So far, no good news.

I went through a period a couple of years ago with the same symptoms. So the versions of Photoshop et al were different as was my OS (Vista).Unfortunately, I can't now remember any details nor how it got cured! I think I suspected a RAM problem for some reason. Sorry to be so vague but thought it might be useful to know you are not unique!
