Lightroom: LR 5 gets slower stepping through and flagging images in Library

I recently upgraded from 4.4 and all I'm doing is going through my catalog "rejecting" some images. With each press of the reject key, the program gets increasingly slower to the point that my entire system is locked up. This never happened with version 4 and I've made no hardware changes. I'm running a system with an i7 processor, 12gb ram, 2 ssd drives and a 2TB spinner -- all internal. I'm not even using the develop module yet. Why would flagging images cause such slowness. When I look at Resource Monitor, nothing is spiked. Very mysterious and irritating.

Any ideas? I can only reject about a dozen images and then lightroom becomes unresponsive and I'm unable to do anything else. Resource Monitor shows everything is normal, but mouse movement (for example) is glacial and LR keeps grabbing and releasing focus.
