Why does Photoshop crash half way through when I am trying to do an initial upload of my photos with my new copy of Photoshop Elements 12

Not much to add. Every time I try to load my photos into PE12, it crashes at around photo number 2501 or thereabouts. As a results I am unable to use the program properly. At the moment I would happily trade in the program for something a bit more user friendly.
