Why is my Lightroom v5.4 - 5.5 - 5.6 crashing ALL the time without any noteworthy action being taken?!?

I've purchased Lightroom in order to do right - could easily have grabbed a pirate copy from the web but decided I'd rather pay for someone else's work. Now I feel I'm left out in the cold by Adobe.

If I pay for a product, I expect a) a working product and b) support if it isn't. Now starting at version 5.4 up to current 5.6 my Lightroom crashed more often than not. While I try to scroll through a collection for example, or try to import a few ( I end up with only one option: ask the community. WTF Did I buy from the community? No, I payed Adobe so I expect a knowledgeable Adobe support employee to help me out.

Consider contacting Adobe "technical support" (customer service):

If you purchased a perpetual license, this is one of the places for support.

Can you describe:

Your platform, OS, Version, any error messages?

@ Rikk Flohr, I did purchase a perpetual license and a big part of my frustration comes from the fact that this place is my _only_ form of support according to the (Dutch) support page. Why is this frustrating? Because I feel that getting any closer to a solution takes way too much effort on my part where it's your software that's buggy.

Having said that... answers to your questions in order to give you a chance to help me out, now we got this far:
platform = PC, OS = Windows 7 Business Edition x64, Lightroom version 5.6 [974614], no error messages besides the basic windows "Adobe Lightroom encountered a problem and needs to close"

By the way, I'm currently building a new catalog file. As a quick scan through the forum often highlights that as a failure point.

Did the new catalog work?
