Photoshop: Why do I have to open Photoshop then my file rather than simply clicking on the file? (File associations issue)

How can I get image files to open in Photoshop when I click on them rather than having them open in my Windows previewer, then instead of being able to choose Photoshop to open them, only having the option of opening them in Photoshop Elements. Currently, I have to first open Photoshop then open the image file I want to use from within the application. This is so time consuming and never used to happen until a few versions ago of Photoshop.

Because something is broken and your OS thinks that Photoshop can't open the files.

Which OS version are you using?

Are you on Windows 10? After a recent OS update, Microsoft set the file associations for common file types to open in their application by default.

I'm still using Windows 7 but planning to move across to Windows 10 when its fully trusted (i.e. no major updates expected). I'm subscribe to Adobe online and download and use updates to the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustration, InDesign, etc.) as soon as they become available. Latest release was one or two days ago but the problem remains so I'm guessing it must be with Windows though I can't be sure.

have you always had this problem? Or did it just start? You can try reinstalling Photoshop over itself, which should repair file associations.
