LIGHTROOM - Why can't I preview my photos when my external hard drive is not plugged in?

Some photos are visible, but others are randomly grayed out. When I plug in my external hd, all are there and visible. I've tried re-booting, relaunching from a previous catalog, etc. Nothing works. Help!

Sounds like you have a corrupted preview cache. http://www.lightroomqueen.com/article...

Thanks, Victoria. It's working through it now. I'll give an update when it's done. Any idea what may have caused this?

Not a clue... it happens once in a blue moon.

It worked! Thank you so much. I simply renamed the previews folder rather than move, so I guess there are no additional steps?

Yeah, that's fine, you might want to move the renamed one to the trash as it'll be taking up space.

There is no new folder. It looks like it just re-wrote over the re-named one.

That would be... unusual... as the previews folder name usually matches the catalog name. So just to confirm, you have been able to open the catalog ok? You didn't need to reimport files or anything like that?

This is interesting. I just did a double-check and now there's a new catalog previews folder with the extension lrdata with the new name. I don't remember seeing it before! Then I opened the actual LR5 catalog folder and only 34 pictures where in it. I relaunched the most current catalog from by back-ups and all is fine.

Er, yes, things do seem to have gone adrift a bit there.

When you relaunched the most current backup, did you just double click to open it, or did you move it out of the backup folder first? The reason I ask is people often just open it in the backup folder, and a few months later, delete the backups folder... including their working catalog.

Ok, now I'm confused. I clicked on the backup folder from yesterday and it asked if I wanted to re-launch - I said yes and everything was back to normal. Then I did some further exploring and I see that not every backup folder has additional folder in it.

Ok, look, I'm just closing up for the day, but I'll check back tomorrow if no one else has fixed it with you.

In the meantime, can you post screenshots of the backup folder, the previews folder you renamed, and anything else you think might be helpful in unmuddling this.

Sure. Here are a few screen shots. I drilled down so you can see the structure. Hope that helps.

Perfect. So if you double-click on the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat in the first screenshot, does it contain all of your photos? They might have grey thumbnails initially.

It looks like you renamed the corrupted preview cache to Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews-Carol.lrdata - that's the one you can delete when we're back to normal.

I can't believe this! I just clicked on the Lightroom 5 Catalog icon in the first screen shot and nothing! I opened LR and none of my photos are there! I checked my external hd and they are all there, but not coming into LR.

I just relaunched my catalog from my latest backup and now it's reading from the external hd again.
