When I paste an image on another, I get weird color corruption

I made two documents in InDesign and saved both as jpegs. I am now trying to place one on the other in Photoshop (I have reason for this), but when I do, my image is corrupted. I've done this before so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... Any and all advice is appreciated :)

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

You use the terms »paste« and »place« – but in Photoshop terminology those are different things.
Does the corruption occur if you convert the image, if you copy/paste it,  when placed as a Smart Object, ...?
