Can you post a screen shot of your entire Photoshop interface with the layers panel visible? Might give us more clues as to what you're seeing. Or post better step by step instructions about what you're doing.

Hi Jeff
Following are my step
1. open the image from the bridge.
2. when the raw file open on photoshop as background file, i make a background copy.
3 Then I use quick selection tool to select an area in the picture.
4. when I click add vector mask, I got a checker layer, not a layer mask show the area that I have selected.
I just  got a message saying that I cannot use quick selection tool because of a program error.
Can you tell me how to fix it
Thanks for your help

Ron

Following your directions, it sounds like you're trying to make a vector mask directly from the quick selection (marching ants), when you need to click the Make work path from selection icon (or use the command in the panel menu) in the Paths panel. With that path active, then Cmd-clicking the Layer mask icon will add a vector mask. Everything outside your selection on that layer will be transparent.

Will doing that get you the results you were expecting?

As for the "program error." I get that thrown at me every once in a while. It usually goes away if I quit and restart PS. I think something sometimes just gets farkled in memory.

When I first installed photoshop, it worked very well. It just happened from last week.
Thanks for your help.
