When are originals uploaded to LR CC

I am confused about uploads, all my LR CC Classic collections are shown in LR CC but only as smart previews, I assume because these are what are shared with mobile devices. I then uploaded a set of a couple of thousand images as originals, however only images that had a stated rating seem to have uploaded?? All others are still shown as smart previews. Also all where I have created virtual copies the VC’s show as original files but not the original which is shown as a smart preview!

So in summary I am very confused, is there a document about what exactly is happening when uploading?

Lightroom Classic always uploads smart previews, never originals. So anything you've uploaded to the cloud from Lightroom Classic will be a smart preview only. Virtual copies will also upload as a (new) smart preview. Lightroom CC uploads the originals however.

so if we do not click the box for smart previews, the photos do not go to the cloud. Am I correct?

Thanks Johan, what you say makes sense but I am still unclear on a couple of points.

When I have used LR CC to upload an image that I have made a virtual copy of in LR CC I see the original as a smart preview and the virtual copy shows as an original?

Deb, I do not believe ticking the smart preview box is relevant, if you upload from classic it will upload a smart preview regardless of whether you have built one. Johan - correct?
