Photoshop CC is crashing a lot on my system

I've lived in Photoshop daily since version 7.0. The current Creative Cloud version is the buggiest, least dependable and most frustrating version of this product I've ever used!! It freezes. It crashes. And the purported auto-save feature has never saved anything. I've lost more work in this version in the past month or so than I have in all previous versions combined.

Photoshop CC is the most stable version we've shipped (at least as long as we've been able to track crash reports).

The most common causes of crashes are third party drivers (especially video drivers) and OS bugs.

With more information, we might be able to help you figure out what is going wrong on your system.

I ran flawlessly in CC for about three months. Now CC crashes over and over and over. I am so frustrated I could scream. All my third party drivers, including my video card driver, are up to date. How am I supposed to get any work done?

Without information from the crash report, we can't know why your system is crashing. But the most common causes are still the same.

Ha! There's no way this is the most stable version you have ever shipped. I have had it less than a month, and crashed at least 20 times. I have crashed three times today! It seems to happen most when I am going in to older files and opening them, once they open, it crashes with the very next thing I do...

Yes, it is. Most of our crashes are due to third party bugs (drivers, plugins, etc.). If you would like to know why your system is crashing so often, create a new topic and include the detailed crash report and OS version.

PS CC always crash and crash and crash!!!

My System:
Intel Core i7-6700 3.40 GHz
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (Update Jan 2017)

Well, I'm running it on the same exact same machine I ran CS4 and CS5 and don't recall EVER having a crash with either one of those products. I've had THREE crashes of CC this week alone, and at least two last week, all of which have caused lost work product. It's a pretty generic Intel MB with an i5-3570K, 8GB of RAM running Windows 7 Pro. As I said, it ran previous versions without a hiccup. BTW, there's no indication whether you're getting my crash reports or not, so maybe you don't know what you don't know.

Oops, missed that you started the topic. But generally dredging up old topics is a bad idea.
Well, CC is pretty stable for other users. And the majority of crashes are still coming from third party drivers and third party plugins. Without the detailed crash logs, we cant know exactly why you are crashing (and with Windows crash reports, there isn't always enough detail to determine the cause).

I too experience frequent crashes with this product. Elements is way more stable but not as powerful as I need it to be.

Not only does it crash but is also very sluggish. Much like anyone using this product, I don't have time for that.

"Scratch disks are full" then it crashes. Can't even work on more than one photo at a time. Incredibly frustrating.

You probably need to create a new topic instead of adding onto a year old topic (especially in the middle of the topic).

I've got exactly the same issues, except that It crashes 5 times a day, which never ever had happened before with all the previous versions I've worked with.

All the latest drivers, on windows 7, two video cards, 3 screens. No clues of why it doesn't work at all: It's a plain pain.

Yep....I had at least three crashes yesterday and one today. On the plus side, out of the dozens of crashes I've had, ONE time I did get a recovered file! Maybe that's progress. Today's crash I lost the work. Definitely the flakiest Photoshop I've had in over ten years of non-stop daily use.

I agree. Just switched to CC 12-12-13. Has crashed on me at least 10 times over a six hour period. Auto save doesn't seem to be working so I am manually saving every few steps. Everything is running so....slowly I feel like I working back in the dark ages of 1995. Never had such problems with CS6. Thought the whole point of CC was that they could push out bug fixes faster and in real time. Wish I had stayed with CS6 for another year!!

I have the exact same issues with Photoshop CC. Has NOT worked since I signed up for CC in November. IT crashes whenever I try to do anything. Had three unsuccessful rounds with tech support - and they can't get it to work. Uninstalled, used the clean-up tool, re-installed, clean out any programs drivers not in use on my computer, updated video drivers twice - the software just won't work. windows 7 pro, 16 GB, not running any plug-ins. I am done.

Have you installed all the updates?
And what does the crash report say is the faulting module? Most of the crashes we're seeing are just due to bugs in third party drivers and plugins (which need to be updated).

I have kept up with updates. After your comment, I did checked and went ahead and installed the most recent bug fix update. It made no difference. The problems are still there. I have no plug-ins and have upgraded my video card twice to try and resolve the issue. Currently using GeForce GTX 660. Any other recommendations?

Without seeing the details from the crash report, no.

Again, most users aren't seeing Photoshop CC crash that often - so there is most likely something specific to your system, or that you do often and other users do not (some command, etc.) causing the problem.

Chris, how can you say "most users aren't seeing Photoshop CC crash that often" -- mine does and I'm fed up with it, but no you don't know about it because I am too busy trying to recapture the time I've lost. I bet there are dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of users who are upset about the constant crashes but like me are too busy trying to meet deadlines because of the crashes. Don't go assuming, Chris. Not nice.

I am on an iMac running the latest OS X 10.9.1
I joined CC a few months ago and all was fine. Two days ago it starts to crash. And I mean all the time. Adobe Tech Team have been online for hours and even had remote access of my machine and still cannot fix it.

As a pro photographer I am seriously behind on my editing and getting more and more frustrated.

You're crashing deep inside MacOS code - there's nothing Adobe can do about that. From the look of it, the OS is trying to close a menu window and corrupts it's own data structures. That sounds like it is related to the "white menu" bugs in MacOS 10.9. You can try the plugin posted to work around the white menu OS bug, downgrade to a stable OS version, or wait for Apple to fix the OS bug.

Thanks Chris. Two days, over 7 hours online with technical support and a lot of stress, and that is the first most logical answer I have had! Will take a look at it. Do you know if others are experiencing the same issue?

I haven't seen too many similar crashes - but again, it could be related to a MacOS bug that normally manifests as white menus. It looks like the same sort of error in the same part of the OS code, despite the difference in symptoms. But without access to Apple's source code to determine the cause of the errors, I can't know for sure. (and I'm kinda hoping this is a clue as to the nature of the known OS bug)

Yep. Same issue here. I keep re-creating work after losing it in Photoshop CC freezes. After waiting 10-20 mins I just use the task manager to end PSCC process and start all over. This happens to me at least 2 or 3 times a day. I even found a simple fix in a forum related to logging out of CC and logging back in through PSCC. This helped me for about a week. Then the freezes came back. This is the only issue I have with Creative Cloud products. I'm just restarting PS praying each day for a fix from Adobe.

I have to say thank you to Chris Cox and to Jeff Tranberry for all their support. Today is day 4 and I have spent a further four hours with the adobe online technicians who quite frankly have no idea.

I cannot even begin to tell you how frustrating it is to be going round in circles and feeling like nobody is listening. After four hours i demanded my case be escalated. The previous technician said he was doing that but then i got sent to another technician on the same level.

They finally agree to escalate the case and say i need to wait 6-7 hours for a call back! Here comes day five!!

Hoping advice that Jeff emailed might help. Here goes.

I want to say a huge THANK YOU to Jeff Tranberry, who took so much time out of his day and evening to offer assistance with the photoshop crashing issue I had.

I think it is only right to give praise where praise is due, and it definitely is here.

Four days and over 15 hours linked to the adobe online technical team and I still was unable to stop the repeated crashing. As a pro photographer I know a little about my machine and the software I have and to be honest, I don’t really want to retrain to be a computer engineer.

But then came Jeff who stuck with the problem, realign through my crash reports and advising me on what to try. He not only made the instructions understandable, but he also provided me with explanations to the questions I had and was honest to say when he was not sure. Jeff gave me things to try and asked I send him feedback each time.

Now this may not work for everyone but I discovered the issue from was to do with the Graphics Processor.

With photoshop open i went into Preferences> Performance> and there I disabled the Graphics Processor)

Hope it helps others too. And thanks again Jeff

This does help with stopping photoshop crashing, it was a really good idea!
The only thing I found wrong with this solution is when I do turn Graphics Processor off, I cant use some f the Render Filters such as Flame, Lighting Effects and a few others..

Turning off GPU usage is a workaround -- you are just avoiding the bugs in your video card driver. But the correct solution is updating the video card driver to pick up bug fixes. That works well on Windows, but on MacOS you have to wait for Apple to issue OS update in order to update your video card driver.

I am also having lots of freezes. I could imagine that no real crash report is sent out... as I have to kill the application through TaskManager. As some others here, I have to say that I never ever had so many problems with PS before CC.

Mostly these freezes happen when I hit CTRL-S for saving work.

My sytem is a DELL Studio XPS i7, 16MB RAM, etc. running Windows 7

That sounds like you have a Windows shell extension DLL that is causing the save dialog to hang/freeze.

I have a new late 2013 iMac running latest version of Mavericks. It was humming along beautifully (a big project) then in the middle of some pretty routine actions (copy/pasting/drawing a rectangle -nothing fancy!) it crashed twice in 5 minutes. I'm not the greatest at this stuff and have never had too many problems with PS either in the disc or CC versions but now I am scared - I can't have this happening with all these deadlines I have! Here is the report - hopefully it contains the holy grail of data! Thanks
ps - the only 'old stuff' I have on my system is a Wacom Tablet from 2008 whose driver is 'not supported' by Mavericks. I have not had problems with it before.

Apple asks you to send the report, then the Adobe dialog comes up and asks you to send in the crash report (because Apple doesn't share).

CC crashes on my system too, A LOT. Especially when working on larger files, like webdesigns 150+Mb files.. As far as I know I have all the latest PS updates as well as drivers on my graphicCard (nVidia Quadro K600).

A crash in MMXCore almost always means that something else called it with bad parameters - so that doesn't narrow down the cause.

What are you doing at the time of these crashes?

Chris, thank you for your reply.

This usually happenes when I am saving the file. Currently I am designing a webpage and file is quite big, about 150mb. Today I checked again and installed latest graphic drivers by nVidia and it is better now, however it still happens. At least I get a recovered document when opening again.

There is another thing I get a lot with Ps CC, when Saving for Web (for example), system often reports lack of RAM and is unable to save (again on larger files). I need to close Ps and open it again fresh, then it works.
This is wierd since I got 16Gb of RAM and about 75% assigned to Ps + extra scratch disks. Did not happen on previous version of Photoshop.

Thanks for your time

150 Meg is at the low size of "medium" files. Big is when you hit gigabyte files.

SaveForWeb doesn't usually run out of RAM like that. Are you using any third party plugins (including any font managers) all the time?

:) Yes, the file is not that big, but it contains many layers, maybe that could be the problem.

I do not use any 3rd party plugins.

Further what is interesting is that Ps is showing only 3,25 Gb of RAM, but I have 16Gb installed? Screenshot attached.

You're running Photoshop 32 bit by mistake. Try launching the 64 bit version to use all of your RAM.

Thank you, so this is probably the problem, I didn ́t notice the switch to 32bit, when updating to CC. Best regards

Just to say, I switched to 64bit and this solved my problem. Looks like low RAM was causing it. Thanks for your help!

I have been using Photoshop since PS4 & have never had the system crash on me until CC! I currently work for an education company where I make education supplements. Obviously, I need these programs & have deadlines. Considering this was the most upgraded program, I thought it would be the most efficient. Now, I think not. The additions/upgrades are nice, but nothing sucks more than a program that continues to fail you when you need it most!

Did Photoshop crash? If so, see the previous requests for useful information to determine the cause.

Or did your whole system crash? In which case you need to identify the failing driver or hardware component.

Its mainly Photoshop. At times, ID or AI will crash, but not as frequently as PS. I'm pretty good about backing up my files to keep as much space as possible on my computer & updating everything. I figured it had to do with CC??

Hello again Adobe,
I went through this entire forum & tried EVERY solution, yet my PS CC still crashes! (unchecking Graphics Processor, signing out of CC, restarting/shutting down computer, closing all programs & windows, unplugging all devices, etc.) Considering my company PAYS for the CC service/program, we deserve to have WORKING programs! I think its a major problem you have paying customers & a growing number of issues added to this same stream. Jobs, passions & patience are all on the line here, Adobe!

Crashes in NTDLL are usually due to drivers or third party plugins.

Disable any third party plugins you have installed.
And update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website.

Thank you Chris Cox. I updated the driver and it seems to be working.

For anyone else having this issue I have the amd Radeon HD 5500 Series and had updated to the newest driver and that is when the issue began for me.
I had to update to the Beta version and it seems to have fixed it.

We all need YOUR HELP!

Without the detailed crash report, we can't know why it is crashing.
Also, make sure you have installed the updates.

Then it hasn't crashed, and you need to create a new topic with a lot more information so people can help you figure out what is wrong with your system.

I work every day in Photoshop for years - never had any problems with it, but within the last days it crashes few times a day (photoshop CC 2014 ). Once it even corrupted the file, and I could not open it anymore! it just informed:

"There was a problem reading the layer data. Read the composite data instead?"
- which opened just a flat preview...

Luckily I made a file backup of this file after the first PS crash, if I didn't I would have lost around one week of work!

This is very frustrating, sending the crash report every time to Adobe.
I have a Mac Pro everything updated.... what's wrong?

First, go install the 2014.1 update.
After that, many of the crashes we are seeing are third party plugin bugs or OS bugs. And without a specific crash report, I don't know exactly why you are crashing.

Photoshop CC won't stay open for more than 5 seconds before it crashes. Can't change settings or anything.

How do I get a crash report???

This is a great conversation that's separate from the main one, so I created a new conversation to continue the discussion.

I am having the very same problems in Photoshop CC 2014, I work on some heavy projects and never turn off my computer. In photoshop CS5 I could work over 3 months straight never closing down the program and never slowing down. In CC using the same exact plugins it runs super sluggish and crashes multiple times a day.

I want to go back to CS5 but I can't, for some odd reason CS5 won't let me open my two effects files saying my scratch disks are full when I have over 5TB of free space.

What OS/version are you running on?

How did you install your plug-ins for 2014? ( http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201... )

Do you have a crash log (Mac) or know what the faulting module is (Win)?

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Directions for sharing your system info from Photoshop:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
32 Gigs of Ram
Nvidia Gforce GT740 Video Card

I installed the plugins as normal. When I double click the file it will bring up the different versions of photoshop I own, check off the ones I want the plugin to associate with, and let it run.

Ok. So you used the latest compatible plug-in versions for CC 2014 downloaded from the manufacture's website?

What does Windows say the faulting module is?

I'm not sure if this thread is still active, but I'm having issues with Photoshop CC crashing everytime I close a document that I have open. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I've checked everywhere and tried uninstalling and re-installing it, but am still having the same problem.

Please Help!

I never had more crashing problem with Photoshop than now. It crashes almost every day. It often freezes for a minute or two. It is very disappointing after using Photoshop for almost 15 years...

I have Wacom tablet intuos5. I have latest AMD Catalyst (15.7.1) drivers and don't have any 3rd party plugins. I also use Avira antivirus.

Check with Wacom for driver updates. You might also try disconnecting the tablet and using a mouse for a while to see if the problem is due to the tablet.

Other than the tablet driver, I'm not sure what else might be responsible.

Hi Chris
I've installed newest wacom drivers but it didn't help. I've been working on mouse and keyboard only since yesterday. It is very hard to switch after few years of using it every day. Anyway it didn't help. Photoshop freezeing on selectons and zoomin in/out. Sometimes few secounds sometimes few minutes.

A few people are reporting hangs/freezes with selection and transform tools. But not everyone is seeing such a problem. So there has to be something about those systems that is causing the problem.

Have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences?

Have you tried disabling font previews? (Type->Font Preview->None)

AMD's drivers have some problems in Lightroom, but we haven't reproduced any problems on our systems in Photoshop.
