Lightroom CC: What does this sync error mean

Major failure to sync Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC

This is a sample of the sync errors for a large migration to Lightroom CC. About 5.5% of my files show this error.

 

What dose it really mean and more to the point how can I fix iT?

The affected photos are mixed. Some are from current cameras and some are from film scanners.

They all seem to work well in Lightroom Classic. The total error file count is 997 so it is a major problem.

Hi Warren,

To investigate more, could you please explain the workflow you followed before you encountered this issue ?
Any screenshots will help us.

When you say Lightroom classic works well , does that mean the issue is only in Lightroom CC ?

Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue.
Please try to do this :

1. Quit Lightroom
2. Press Option button on your Mac OR Alt button on your Win and launch Lightroom again.
3. Click on Reset Preferences when asked to.
4. Go to Preferences->Lightroom Sync and Delete All Data for once. This will clear all the photos loaded to the cloud.

And now try to Sync your files again.

The posted sample is just a portion. There were 996 nearly identical items plus the header material.

The situation has changed -- not for the better. I followed one suggestion and deleted all data from the cloud. Now, of course, the system will not let me sync the catalog again. I suspect that there is a flag that can be reset to allow a second try, but I don't know how to do this. Interestingly, my account shows that there are no photos, but the same amount of space is used.

Right now this is a major mess.

1) Are you checking this in Lightroom CC or Lightroom Classic CC ? 
2) If you are checking in Classic CC, then under the identity plate, do you see 'Start'  for the sync activity ?


Note (in Lightroom Classic CC):
a) If you click 'start', then Lightroom starts syncing the current catalog (that is opened).
b) Since you have deleted all the data from the cloud, "All synced photographs" will become empty (upon clicking 'Start'). However, images will not be deleted from the catalog (you have to resync them again)

There are ways and means around the single-migration issue (exporting the contents of the catalog as a new catalog), but skipping ahead without letting the engineers investigate does cause extra issues, for sure.

So let's start from where we are... where are you checking the amount of space used?

And let's go back to Arjun's original question... what happened before that error? Because it'll likely happen again, so it's important to figure out before you attempt the migration (??) again?

I was checking the cloud space used in the creative Cloud app. That was yesterday. Today it seems  to be cleaned.

Before my sync attempt, I had added about 20 photos and done a few minor edits. No major activity. Just before the sync, I optimized the catalog. 

The sync took several days, but during the process I changed the system sleep to stay active  . This helped. (the lightroom preference to not sleep seemed to have no effect.)

I do have a copy of the sync log, but have not posted it because of the size.

I notice that new Adobe apps have arrived. Should I update or will that cause more confusion?

You should be fine to update.

Let's also clarify a couple of things...

Migration should only really be run if you're moving over to Lightroom CC and giving up on Classic. Is that what you're doing, or are you going to continue to need to use LR Classic? Or what were you aiming to achieve in migrating?

My intent is to continue to use Classic as my primary tool. My goal with CC is to have t he files backed up and accessible on multiple devices. As CC develops I may move to cloud based editing.

In that case, I wouldn't migrate at this stage. Instead, add the photos and collections to sync from LR Classic and let them upload to the cloud. Then once they're all uploaded, and the smart previews are downloaded into CC, you can add the originals to CC. It should be smart enough to recognize that these are originals of existing synced photos and just upload them to the cloud in place of the smart previews.

Be aware that Classic and CC aren't really designed to work together quite as cleanly as you hope. Most notably, collection hierarchy doesn't sync up/down from Classic, and nor do keywords. Also, you have to be careful to delete photos from Classic, because if you delete from CC, they just get orphaned in Classic.

I think that is what I tried to do. Right now, I can't sync. I probably use the word sync and migrate incorrectly. I want a copy of all my source files and previews in the cloud. I intend to also keep the original data on my mac.

How do I convince Classic to let me sync again?

What happens when you try to turn on Sync in Classic, using the switch in the Activity Center (click on ID plate to show it)

The activity center says sync is on and that nothing is synced. I can pause sync or remove the pause, but nothing syncs.

The original mystery is unsolved, but sync is now working well for me. I reset classic (the original email instructions were incomplete) and synced by collections. There are no errors and all seems right with the world.
