Lightroom: Web/Mobile Thumbnails/previews not updating

A strange problem just reared its head.

I recently imported a bunch off fresh Raw (NEF) images, into Lightroom (using the Desktop CC version). Allowed them to upload and sync, then allowed them to download and sync into Lightroom Classic.

I then edited the images in Lightroom Classic, and allowed that to sync. Checked in Lightroom (Desktop CC version), and all is well.

Then I wanted to display them on my TV downstairs to the family (using my iPad and Airplay to the Apple TV), but many of them didn't show my crops and edits.

On checking, I can see that certain images seem 'stuck' in the web interface, and on my mobile devices. It looks like the thumbnails and smart previews are not updating themselves.

I can force them to show correctly by opening them into an Edit panel, but in grid or preview views they're not correctly showing.

Some are showing partial adjustments as well, such as one might show the copping, but no other adjustments, and others show no adjustments at all, while many images show correctly.

I have tried to trigger the updates by adding metadata, and making small minor adjustments to trigger a re-sync (using both Classic and CC versions), but the web/mobile versions are not updating.

Clearly the data is going somewhere, as they all show correctly in both Desktop apps immediately after applying any changes.

Here's some screen shots showing the grid views I'm seeing:

This one is from Lightroom Web.

This one is from Lightroom (CC Desktop Version)

And this is Lightroom Classic

In the Desktop apps, all is well, and everything displays fine. In the web and mobile versions I'm seeing things differently.

I selected the No.2 image from the grid, and I see this in preview mode in the web app:

And then if I go into the Edit mode, I see this:

Note that I've not made any adjustments in the web version at all, this is what it's displaying from my desktop synced data. This also shows the same in the web app on my iPhone and iPad.

All apps are currently full up to date with latest versions all round. System is MacOS 10.14.6.

If it helps, I did a similar workflow on a much larger import last month, and that's all working and displaying perfectly fine.

Any suggestions.

Cheers

Andy

Maybe for the Web, you have to display the page again, or empty the browser cache to reload everything!

For Mobile apps, I do not know.

Personally, I do not keep the RAW in the LR catalog, but since LR Classic, I delete them and synchronize a new collection from LR Classic to LR Mobile .... And so, it does not eat my quota on the Cloud.

Yeah, I have already done all the cache purging possible in all apps and the browsers - I even tried two different browsers (one of which would not have had cached images stored).

As far as I can see with this, it seems to be that the web/mobile part of the system is not updating it's thumbnails and previews, the desktop apps are working fine, and the mobile device apps are obviously relying on what is available on the web storage.

What seems to be missing is a cache purge on the web interface.

I'm using this setup now as it's my intention, in the future, to switch solely to the CC based system. I'm doing a bit of forward planning, as it's becoming more likely at some point that I might switch to non-desktop based hardware, so won't have the option of using Lightroom Classic. I wanted to start preparing for that, and work with getting my entire collection stored in the cloud.

However, until such time, I still use Lightroom Classic for management and editing, as it's still faster and easier.

OK, having no fast enough Internet connection, and no possibility to increase it currently, personally, I stay on LR Classic, I think it is currently over!
For small exchanges,   worked fine for me, but do not be squeezed!

Done some more testing here.

There's definitely something screwy going on with the web side of things.

I've tried the log out and back in again on all devices, which did nothing.

Any Edits applied within either of the desktop apps sync to the other desktop app without problem.

They do not appear in thumbnail view in the web interface, nor in Detail view in the web interface - and worse, any cropped images get chopped off about 1⁄3 off the right side.

Clicking Edit Image on the web interface, or opening the Edit panel on the mobile devices shows the image correctly.

Editing an image on the mobile apps shows up in the other apps, but still not in the web interface.

Using Edit Image on the web interface displays the applied adjustments, and fresh adjustments can be applied, but I cannot 'Save & Exit', it just shows the progress marker indefinitely.

Although I can see the adjusted images in the mobile device apps, in Edit mode, the thumbnails and Previews revert to the unadjusted state on the next selection of that image.

I've even tried resetting all the images and redoing all the adjustments.

But, in all that, a few of the images do show my adjustments just fine.

Andy,

Thanks for the detailed information!

I spoke to an engineer on the Lightroom mobile team and he would like the following:
  • Diagnostic Log for Lightroom Classic
  • Diagnostic Log for Lightroom Desktop
  • Diagnostic Log for your Mobile Client
For LrClassic:
Go to Preferences
Lightroom Sync tab
Hold down [Alt/Opt]
Click [Generate Diagnostic Log]

For LrDesktop
Go to Preferences
General
Hold down the [Opt/Alt] key to make [Diagnostic Log] button appear.

iOS Log File

can be triggered when you  open up the  Lr Mobile settings and  then navigate in to the Help&Support section and long-press (2-3 sec) “Access our Support Forum”-entry and a  diagnostic log will be generated and attached to your local mail client.

Hi Rikk,

Not sure if something was done, but I suddenly found that they all got updated with the trigger of a small change to an adjustment (didn't work on previous attempts).

If something was fixed, I thank you. Although thank you anyway for your time and effort.

Regards

Andy
