Were you trying to select on a layer, that might have been transparent in the area you tried to select?

Er... yes. I just thought this used to be possible. Got the feeling that I used that quite often (as it works in the mask mode, where the subtracted area is blank, too). Am I wrong?

It is possible, but if you're on a layer that is transparent, then you are selecting nothing - and thus the warning.
Or if you make a feathered selection and nothing is more than 50% - you get the warning.

The warning was added long ago to help users understand when they've made a mistake (like feathering, or targeting the wrong layer, etc.).

Hmm, I know the message. I could not remember this. Sorry for the fuzz and thanks for the clarification, Chris.
