I print text on images. I previously used MS Word and with an autoshape fill of 30 to 100% I have created an almost invisible layer below the text area and the image to make the text more readable and visible. How can I achieve this using Photoshop? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

1) You probably need a better choice of fonts for readability,

2) Use layer styles. Outer glow doesn't have to use screen blend mode, and drop shadow doesn't have to be offset. But keep the effect subtle, otherwise you'll reduce readability again.
