Allowing us to re-use a layer or mask multiple times by creating a reference to itself.
In other words, a way for us to apply the same layer mask to multiple layers without having to put them all under a group. Or a way to re-use a layer in multiple places, with the copy reflecting the changes made to its source and vice-versa.

Smart objects don't quite fill the need here, since they require opening a separate document and taking the user out of context.

Photoline does this with "Virtual Copies" and it works quite well.

There has been a Request for »Smart« Layer Masks that I couldn’t locate easily, but that may not be quite what you are after anyway.

But as for using a Layer Mask on a Group compared to using the same Layer Mask on the multiple contained Layers individually: You are aware that the two can create considerably different results?

Well, smart/reusable layer masks would definitely be a great start!

I do realize the limitations of using a mask on a group vs same mask on multiple layers. The issue i wanted to bring up is more of an organizational one, really.

The workflow I was thinking of is more or less the same way maya/max can instance objects in order to save memory.
