Lightroom: "Read metadata from file" should not be disabled for videos

I have a SmartCollection "Last Month" but videos way older than last month show up in there, too.

Then I realized when I go to "Catalog > All Photographs" and have them sorted by "Capture Time" the videos show up as most recent, too. This is quite annoying.

You're showing the capture time from the OS, but Lightroom doesn't recognize video capture metadata. See Work with video in Lightroom. My guess is you imported the video within the month and perhaps the smart collection is using that criteria.

Indeed that is the case.

The article says "You cannot see or edit the video camera’s capture time in Lightroom" ...but that does not mean that the "Capture Time" should become "Import Time".

Most people I talked to about this agreed that Lightroom should fall back to file creation time during import - that's also what they'd expected (and like it seems to be the case for photos, too)

But you are saying that is expected behavior?

Where could I file a bug report/enhancement request for this.

OK. Seems like this is partly my fault:

I imported them with the wrong creation time, then fixed the creation time later, then selected all photos+videos in the folder and ask LR to "read metadata from file". This worked fine the photos - but not for the videos. I just realized that the "read metadata from file" is disabled for videos. So LR quietly ignored the videos when I expected it to have re-read the metadata.

So I guess I could delete the videos and re-import them to get around this. But still I would like to open an enhancement request. "read metadata from file" should not be disabled for videos. Even if it's just to re-read the time from disk.

Where could I open such a request?

If you want to be able to set capture time or save metadata back to the files for video, you can use the Any File or Video Asset Management plugins. These aren't quite as good as having the capability built in to LR, but they get the job done.

Thanks for the pointers, John. I just re-imported the videos and wrote a quick plugin to add them back to all the collections they were in. So things are OK now. Still I think the re-read through "read metadata from file" should be supported. Let's hope for LR4.

Agreed. Video is definitely a second-class citizen when it comes to LR metadata.
