Photoshop: Vertical Red Lines while working - Glitch, Bug, GPU problem? (Win32)

  • 5
  • Problem
  • Updated 8 months ago
  • (Edited)
I am working with some documents in Photoshop CC. As I use the scrubby zoom, vertical red lines appear and disappear as I work. Eventually, the problem causes Photoshop to crash.

I recreated the issue while screen recording. It did not crash this time, but it does show the render issue that occurs.

I have not tested this same issue on Photoshop CS6 yet.

I would like to know if this is more isolated to my workstation or if this is a problem that's been seen before.

I posted the video here:

I think it is a driver issue. I would go directly to the manufacturer's website and grab the latest drivers:

I updated my driver this morning to the latest before I made the video to attempt to solve the problem.

I have this issue only in Photoshop CC and not Photoshop CS6. I worked with the same file and did the exact same things and everything ran smoothly.

Thanks. You are set to Advanced (see my comment below). What is the setting set to in CS6? (I'm going to guess it's set to Basic in CS6)

The other thing to try is select Edit>Preferences>Performance... and click [Advanced Settings...]. Set the Drawing Mode to "Basic" and restart.

I am currently running into this issue.... I was running Photoshop CC and never had a problem. I recently upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 and I am getting this same problem. When I get home tonight I will share the Photoshop System Info.

It may be a long shot, posting on a thread that's a year old but...

I'm also running into this problem. It's frustrating to see that, this bug still has not been patched.

My graphics drivers are up to date.

I've tried setting Drawing Mode to "Basic" and restarting. I've also disabled Graphics Processor altogether. Neither has solved the issue.

I get random blocks of stripes - c,m,y,k or black that appear after I crop images or use "Auto Tone," "Auto Contrast," "Gaussian Blur."

That still means that there is a bug in your video card or it's driver.

Make sure you have updated the drivers from the GPU maker's website.

Thanks for the advice Chris but I am left with only questions. Please forgive my lack of knowledge I understand that GPU means graphic processing unit but how do I discover what the GPU is in the machine. In control panel I have seen reference to ASUS GPU Tweak is this the GPU or just something that works on the GPU

If you don't know what video cards you have in your machine, check Help-> System Info, or the system configuration information.

On Windows, you need to update the drivers from the GPU maker's website.
On MacOS, you turn off GPU support until Apple can release a fix in an OS update.

Thanks Chris I found the name of the card as you described went to the manufacturers site only to find that when I searched their site they found nothing. I re entered the name as fully written in the list and the manufacturers site then offered me a laptop for sale. I then asked windows to search for a driver update and after a few minutes Windows returned the message that the driver is up to date.

Go to the GPU maker's website, not the card maker.
That would be NVidia, AMD/ATI, or Intel - depending on what GPU(s) you have in your system.

This is not a driver problem, it is a Photoshop settings problem. To fix it, go to Preferences -> Performance, and set Cache Levels to 4 (the default) if it was 1 (which somehow it seems to sometimes get set to, not sure why). You can instead simply click the "Default" button in the Performance pane which as of this writing should set Cache Levels to 4 and Tile Size to 1024 KB. With those settings you should no longer see the red vertical bands.

I got this solution from here:
