Photoshop CS6: Vector paths selection, option to stay on current layer, respect layer selection.

Using the "Direct Selection Tool" - when I try to select a path's points by dragging from outside of it, to inside if it, photoshop selects the path behind it. I might (...) expect this behavior from the "Path selection tool" - but not from the direct selection one. The "direct selection tool" is supposed to select vertices, not the entire path.

I think the main problem is that now Paths are on layers, I expect them to be treated as such. Right now, the path selection and modifier tools do not respect my current layer selection, like all other photoshop tools do. I'd be more than happy to hunt for a toggle to set this as a preference. Please name it "Vector tools respect user layer selection" ;)

When using the direct select tool, I'd like it if the first click didn't select a path but only dragging it did. Maybe a single click chooses the path underneath, and a click and drag would only select the paths I intersect with with. That would definitely save me time.

Can the vector select tools not change layers ever? Why would this ever be useful?

Someone please explain this.
