Using local correction presets in Camera Raw 6.6 do not behave as expected

In Bridge 4.0.5.11, I am using Camera Raw (ver. 6.6) to make corrections to a NEF file. Using the Adjustment Brush, I am using a local correction preset I saved previously and painting in an adjustment of -.20 in Exposure, -.10 in Brightness. Then I click New, to make a new adjustment, select a different preset I made of +.20 Exposure, and +.10 Brightness, but instead of letting me paint in that new adjustment, it goes back to the previous adjustment I made and lightens it, instead of leaving it alone (darker) and creating a new one. If I click New, then paint with original preset (darkening it), then click on the +.20/+.10 preset, it lightens that second adjustment, as one would expect.

However, if I click on New, then manually change sliders, it does not touch previous adjustment, and lets me apply these settings to a new adjustment fine.

Am I missing something here about how those local correction presets work- aren’t they a way to apply settings using “brush” without having to manually change sliders each time?

Hi Robert,

The last point you make (However, if I click on New, then manually change sliders, it does not touch previous adjustment, and lets me apply these settings to a new adjustment fine) is expected behavior. Clicking on New and setting the sliders sets up ACR for creating a new local correction adjustment, with those slider settings. Previously existing local adjustments are not affected.

The earlier point (but instead of letting me paint in that new adjustment, it goes back to the previous adjustment I made and lightens it, instead of leaving it alone (darker) and creating a new one) is not expected behavior. I tried to reproduce that now but could not. When I click New, then select another local correction preset, and then paint, my previous local correction is left alone (as expected), and a new pin is created denoting my new local adjustment.

Perhaps you can provide some more details and hopefully we can repro in-house.

Trying to think of what other details I can add. Mac OS 10.6.8, D200 NEF files imported through Lightroom 3, contact & © metadata added when importing. Rough edit done in LR, then batch renumber, but no corrections done there. Then, over to Bridge, it makes its thumbnails, then I work later on a bunch of images in raw window, or even days later to make corrections & adjustments.

If I go to next image, then back, I can use presets fine. Same if I go to Basic tab, then back.

I just realized I could make & save presets a few days ago, so I have no idea if this behavior is recent or long term.

Thanks.
