Lightroom ecosystem: Using the Search Bar to filter by date is confusing

Using the Search Bar to filter photos by date is really inconsistent and gives a lot of unexpected results, as it searches other photo metadata and doesn't seem to find all the pictures you'd expect.

Some examples I've tried:

  • "February 2" shows photos from February with a "2" in the filename/metadata
  • "February 02" shows photos from February 2nd, but includes other photos with "February" or "02" in the filename/metadata
  • "February 2 2020" shows photos from February 2nd 2020, but includes photos from February 2020 with a "2" in the filename/metadata
  • "February 02 2020" is close, but doesn't include all photos taken on that date
  • "02/02/2020" shows photos taken on the 2nd of every month so far in 2020
  • "February 02, 2020" seems to be the best search format I've found but you still need to 0-prefix single digit dates, and on a few days it's missing a couple of photos compared to what "By Date" shows.

The ideal solution would be autocomplete that kicks in when it sees you typing a date (as it does when you start typing a person's name or a keyword etc). Once you select an option it would add the date filter as a "token" in the search bar, as it does currently when you pick a date under "By Date".

Using "By Date" in the sidebar works in a pinch, but has a number of frustrating limitations:

  • It can't be combined with an album filter - trying to add an album filter clears the date filter
  • Not present in the mobile apps
  • Doesn't allow "on this day" searches (ie all photos taken on 11th May)
  • Less convenient than just typing, given how powerful the search bar is
