Photoshop: Using Text Tool Freezes the CC 2014.2 x64 release (Win 7)

I have just updated Photoshop CC to 2014.2.0 -- 20140926.r.236 x64 release. Now I am experiencing an issue when I use the text tool to just type a few words on a new document or layer. The application seems to freeze up as soon as I start typing? I wait several minutes with nothing happening and have to resort to using the Windows task manger to kill the photoshop processes. This did not happen before I updated to this release?? Please advise how to fix this if possible to rsdean0001@rsdean.com

Same problem here. Super aggravated. Running Windows 7 64-bit. Have to kill it with Task manager.

This is odd.  I have been using Win7 with 64 bit a LOT and haven't seen a single problem.

Could you try following the steps here (http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html) to clear your font cache and see if that solves your problem?  I'd like to get to the bottom of this and with three complaints, I'm concerned.

Thanks,
David

I tried all of the troubleshooting that was applicable. That being said I just tried turning off the font preview a second time and this time it allowed me to type and commit it. As soon as I turned the font preview back on (to medium) and tried to type, it locked up right away. So it kind of works but that isn't a fix just a band aid. I use the font preview as a reference all of the time and it's part of the software so I should be able to be use it and not lock everything up.

David,
I can finally get the Text tool to work without freezing up Photoshop if I use Solution #2 in the document at the link above.

Solution 2: Turn Font Preview off in Photoshop's Preferences.
Photoshop CC and CS6:
Choose Type > Font Preview Size.
Select None.

Using this solution to Turning off the font preview however does not allow one to view a sample of the fonts you might want to use.

The work around is to
1. From the menu, Choose Type > Font Preview Size > Medium to Turn the preview on,
2. Select the Text tool,
3. On the Text tool options, check and select the font you want to use,
4. Before using the text tool to insert text, Choose Type > Font Preview Size > None to Turn the preview off
5. Then go to your document to add the text you want to use with the selected font, apply any options (e.g, arc) and commit with the check mark.

If you want to change fonts, again go through these work around steps.

I had no problems in the previous release nor in CS6 with this type of font issue. This seems to be a problem, at least for a few of us, that needs to get fixed hopefully in the next release since this work around is pretty cumbersome.

If it is not going to be fixed soon then some FAQ should be posted to advise those experiencing this issue with a proposed work around until it can be fixed.

Thanks for pointing me in direction to help me find this work around.

My thoughts exactly. It's a workaround but not a solution. Hopefully they can get this figured out. Glad it's not just me. :)

That is a strong indication that the problem is caused by a corrupt font, or OS font cache on your system.

I cleared my font cache. Also I have never had a problem until the new update on Oct 6 and I use Photoshop pretty much everyday so if there was a corrupt font I think it would have caused a problem before now. If there was a current font test script for CC I would be glad to run it but the troubleshooting tips only have a version for CS5 and CS6.

I also have the same problem - Windows 7 64 - I was working on the same document with the same fonts yesterday before the update and it worked fine - but today I can only type 2 or 3 letters before it freezes for up to 4 or 5 minutes - then I can type a few more letters.
Very frustrating but changing the font preview to none is a temporary fix

Howdy folks,

Okay, it is starting to sound like there's a real problem here.  Unfortunately, I work with text all the time and haven't seen this problem even once during the development process nor have any beta-testers.  I believe you're encountering an issue, I just don't know what element is missing from my setup but present on yours to trigger this issue.

It sounds like everyone on this thread having the problem is running Windows 7, correct?  Richard is specifically running Win7.1 as am I.  What about everyone else?  I'm assuming we're all running in English?  What other applications do you have running at the same time, such as email or Word or a browser?  What about fonts?  Perhaps you're all running a specific font that is triggering the problem?  Do you have any note-worthy, non-standard fonts installed?  Do you have missing fonts that are being updated through Typekit?  Are you running with the new Design Library panel open or closed?

I'd like to help solve this problem for you, but I'm going to need more data because I can't reproduce it yet.

Any info is helpful,
Thanks,
David

I did have the design library panel open. I had Firefox open while working. Fonts.. Well I have a few non standard fonts but not many. I was using the same font in bold and in italics in the same document if that's of any interest. And from memory I do have some couple of typekit fonts but I wasn't using them in this document.

I do not have any non-standard fonts installed. When I was experiencing the problem I had no other applications open and even re-booted several times and still experienced the problem with no other applications open. I did delete the font cache per the trouble shooting tip you sent but that made no difference.

-I am running Windows 7 Ultimate Service pack 1.
-English
-The new Design Asset Library was open by default.
When it first happened I had Firefox and Microsoft Outlook open but I have since then tried cleaning my hard drive, updating, rebooting and starting from scratch with nothing open but Photoshop and it still locks up. Only works when I tuen off the font preview but even then it hangs up some. A tech from Adobe actually called me today. He tried resetting my preferences but it didn't help. He is going to call back on Wed after I have had a chance to check my work computer (which is also Win7 64 bit).
-No specific font locks up.
-I have not put any new fonts on lately. I have a few 3rd party freebie fonts but mostly it's stuff I have bought or came with software.
-No type kit fonts
-I have found it takes longer for the type tool to freeze up when I start with a blank document or an unedited photo but it still locks up eventually.
-the documents I intitially had trouble with were Templates used for digital scrapbook pages. A lot of the gals who design scrapbook products use a Mac so those templates could have been designed on a Mac but I don't know for sure if they were.
-It works if the font preview has been turned off.

I wonder if since it works without the font preview, if it could even be video card issue. Maybe it is having trouble rendering the preview and locks up? I don't know about everyone elses PC but mine is old and my husband has been meaning to replace my video card for a while because I have had some other issues with it. He might do it tonight and maybe then I could see if that makes a difference. Maybe the new software just needs a little more 'umph' to run.

Other than that theory, I would like to stress that I have done nothing differently -added fonts, obtained new files, upgraded other software, etc since this started happening, The only change is the new version of CC that came out on the 6th. It seems odd that things only started going wrong right then.

I also have this problem, and I thought I should add that I ran the Font Test and it told me that every one of my fonts had the same error, the "Font Size Error."

I did the Font test with the same results too. Pretty sure all of my fonts aren't suddenly corrupt.

Just to be informative, on the second computer that I run Cloud software on the type tool seems to work fine so far. That computer is running Win 7 Professional 64 bit. It also has about twice the RAM of my PC at home that is having the problems.

Looks like both system font cache and adobe font cache files have been corrupted.  There is no need to run the FontTest script. We have been seeing system font cache is getting corrupted more often on Windows 7.

Steps to find the system font cache on Windows 7
  • Quit Photoshop
  • Go to C:\Windows:\ServiceProfiles:\LocalService:\Appdata:\Local
  •      (Appdata, and  Local are hidden files, but you can "cd" to those directory)
  • Delete fntcache*.dat file.

Steps to delete Photoshop font cache files

  • Go to C:\Windows:\ Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\CT Font Cache\

  • Delete all files

You may not need a OS restart. Let us know whether this solution solve your problems.

I went to the location:
C:\Windows:\ServiceProfiles:\LocalService:\Appdata:\Local

I could not see any file called: fntcache*.dat

The * (wild card) indicates any file that stars with fontcache and follows with blah blah blah.dat needs to be deleted.
I deleted the Windows cache files and so far the type tool seems to be working, I was able to use it for 5 or 10 minutes with no problems and previously it was locking up in 5 or 10 seconds. I did have to boot in safe mode to delete some of those files though. Only time will tell if it's fixed for sure though. I still don't think it's a coincidence this happened when CC2014 installed, especially since there are several of us.

I deleted all the system fontcache files and still get the locking up unless I turn off font preview from the Type menu

Hi Richard,

Did you ALSO delete the Photoshop caches?  You need to delete both.

Thanks,
David

Hi Richard,

Hmmm, strange.  Okay, if you'd like we can do a web-facilitated screenshare so I can see what you are and try and troubleshoot the problem.  I will follow up by email.

Thanks,
David

I have the same issue. I still have the old CS5 version installed and this works fine.

Please go ahead and delete all the font cache files.

Adobe's font cache file is located in a different location for CS5, please refer to the document http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/t... to find the location of the Adobe's font cache for CS5.

Again Adobe's font cache file for PS CC 2014 is located at C:\Windows:\ Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\CT Font Cache\

Hi Rudolf,

Did you clear both the OS and Photoshop caches, using the info Vinod provided?  Are you running Windows 7 or a different operating system?

Try going to http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html and try the font test for Solution #5.  What are your results?

And, finally, does turning off the font previews help you?

Thanks,
David

David is there a font test for the Photoshop CC 2014.2.0 -- 20140926.r.236 x64 release? The font test found at the link you provided above for CS6 does not work this CC release.

Hi David,

I only cleard the Photoshop cache and not the OS one. Turning off the font previews worked. However, I deleted the OS font cache and now I don't have the issue, even with font preview on.

That was my experience as well. It has been working great since I cleared the OS cache.

Hi Richard,

If you uncheck "Clear Font Cache" then the script will run with the CC 2014 version.  We'll get a new script out soon without this limitation.  Please go ahead and re-run this script with this unchecked -- I've a feeling that you still have one or more corrupt caches on your machine.

Thanks,
David

It would appear that my issue has been resolved by deleting bot the OS and Photoshop font caches. The fist time I only deleted the Photoshop cache and that didn't work.

The Adobe/Photoshop cache is holding the data it got from the OS. So if the OS cache is bad, you really have to delete both.

Hi Richard,

It sounds from the comments above that the OS cache is the culprit for other users.  You might want to go back, delete both caches again at the same time and then retest.

Thanks,
David

Thank you! But I think I solved it by uninstalling an old version Adobe CS4 on my computer, perhaps that was interfering with what was going on!

That shouldn't have had any impact at all - the versions install separately.

I have had this same problem with Windows 7 and PS CC 2014. I have tried all kinds of solutions, turning the font preview off solved the problem. Now, Adobe should get to work on the real solution.

We have been working, but so far the problem always comes down to a corrupt font file, or a corrupt OS font cache. And most users are not seeing such a problem. If you cannot solve the problem with the normal troubleshooting steps, then David will work with you to gather more information.

Exactly the same problem here. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

I was working on a document fine. I did the update to Photoshop, and now it freezes every time I select the text tool.

I'm currently reinstalling Photoshop (and then found this thread), but it is definitely a problem with the update. NOTHING changed on my machine other than the CC update, and with other claiming the same problem, is HAS to be an update problem.

Sort it out Adobe!

Hi Jamie,

Are you sure that you deleted both font caches at the same time?  Neither one was locked?  Also, did you use the 32-bit version of the app on this same machine?

We'd like to "sort this out" but cannot reproduce this in-house.  There's one little clue missing...

Thanks,
David

Yes, I deleted both at the same time. I think I possibly MAY have had the 32 bit version on this machine (CS5) at some point. I still have a CS5 folder within the roaming/adobe folder mentioned above.

I also deleted the fontcache file within the system32 folder mentioned below at the same time. (Within the system32 folder there is also a FntCache.dll file, which I didn't delete).

Having done all of the above, Photoshop still hangs if I enable the font preview option and use the text tool (only a Ctrl/Alt/Delete will end it). Leaving the preview to OFF, it runs fine.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the info.  Not what I wanted to hear, but it is what it is.

Have you installed any third party fonts on your machine?  What others applications do you have?  What other applications do you frequently run?

I'd like to try and find the cause of the font cache corruption, in order to fix the problem in the future.  Thus far, all I have is that it's limited to Win7 and might involve users that ran the 32 bit version before switching to 64 bit.  Oh, yes, what service pack are you running with Win7?

All the info I can get helps to narrow down the problem.

Thanks,
David

p.s. -- please note, I do most of my work on Win7 and haven't ben able to repro this once.  I know there's a bug, but I cannot get my machine in the same state.

No fonts, other than what came with Windows or Photoshop have been installed. I run Photoshop CC, Dreamweaver CC, Acrobat XI pro, Edge Animate CC, Premiere Pro CC, CorelDraw X3, Office 2010, Navicat, Sophos AntiVirus, Teamviewer, WAMP Server and a bunch of smaller programs.

I used to have Photoshop / Dreamweaver CS5 installed (uninstalled when I upgraded to CC).

I'm running Windows 7 64bit with Service Pack 1.

I tried deleting all of the font cache files again (including the one in the system32 folder), but enabling the font preview causes a hang up (on a new document, I got as far as writing the 5th line of text before it froze). Disabling font preview is the temp workaround.

Nothing on my PC has changed to cause this problem other than the Photoshop update.

Not sure what else I can give you really. Let me know if you need any more info.

Howdy Jamie,

No, this is a cool start.  Good to know that you haven't added any third party fonts, so we can cross that right off.

Could you send me a copy of your various font caches, so we can try to reverse engineer what went wrong?  I'll follow up with an email.

Thanks,
David

I am also having the same issue. I have tried everyone found on http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/t...

This is preventing me from getting work done so I hope there is a solution ASAP, or an ability to rollback the CC 2014 update that caused this. everything was fine until then.

Let me restate this. the option to turn off the font preview seems to have worked. I wouldn't call this a solution, but a temporary work around.

Delete the Operating System Font Cache and the Adobe Font Cache. Every single file has to go. This fixed it for several of us. Of course it shold have never happened. Clearly the update goofed up something.

Steps to find the system font cache on Windows 7

Quit Photoshop
Go to C:\Windows:\ServiceProfiles:\LocalService:\Appdata:\Local
(Appdata, and Local are hidden files, but you can "cd" to those directory)
Delete fntcache*.dat file.

Steps to delete Photoshop font cache files

Go to C:\Windows:\ Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2014\CT Font Cache\
Delete all files

Hi Matt,

You might need to reboot to get access to those files.  You will, however, need to delete the cache files in order to clear the problem.  For nearly all users, this solves the problem.

Thanks,
David
