Using Alt key in Windows 10 is broken

Several alt-key requiring commands do not work (e.g. copy mask, select source for healing brush). That renders Photoshop basically unusable. This is a well-known multi-year problem, with no well-known solution. (Or, no readily findable solution.) (Yes, this is likely Wacom tablet related.)

I don't have any answers to this but I do have a question.
What version of Photoshop had this capability?

??? The healing brush? That was added before my time. Alt-clicking (alt-button-1) and dragging a mask to copy it has also been around for a while, just isn't as well known.

This image shows the cursor you get in Lr when you press "alt" and left click the mouse. (left-alt-down, button-1-down and try to slide the masking slider -- to be geeky)

Here are the data presented when first a left alt key is pressed and released, followed by a right alt press and release:

Does anybody at Get Satisfaction have any idea why the last half of this interchange is missing? All-in-all, BAD JOB guys (at Get Satisfaction).

Sorry. There was an outage that caused a bit of dataloss. (GetSat has been pretty solid for the close to 8 years we've been using the platform, so I'll cut them a bit of slack).

From the email notifications from your posts that appear to be missing:

Several alt-key requiring commands do not work (e.g. copy mask, select source for healing brush). That renders Photoshop basically unusable. This is a well-known multi-year problem, with no well-known solution. (Or, no readily findable solution.)

---

This is a problem *BOTH* with Photoshop *AND* Lightroom. Both programs see the Alt- key prefix. When I Alt-click in photoshop using the healing brush, I see the life saver pointer, just as I would expect. For almost half a second, I also see the newly selected source as I move the mouse. However, when I click (without the Alt- prefix), I get an error message saying a source has not been selected. Yes, I can take a photo of that, too, but if the issue gets resolved for Lightroom, it will be resolved for Photoshop also.

I cannot (myself) decipher the USB bus data shown above. I am sure the Alt- prefix is coming in as some code that Ps/Lr is not expecting. Since other programs respond correctly to the Alt- prefix, we have one of a couple of situations:

Other applications are accepting the alternate code as an alternate to the typical Alt- code, or

somehow the code is getting muddled when being passed to Adobe software.

I would have no idea about either or any other alternative.

Yep. Those are them. Unlike you, I've had little contact with GetSat. So I got lucky with them in the bad way. :( I'll take your word for it that they get some slack with the data loss and temporary down time with my original post. Still, I do not think they've tested well with Chrome.

That mouse cursor reminds me the auto-scroll cursor used by some mouse software.  If you have mouse software installed from, say, Logitech or Microsoft, it may have assigned Alt-click to another function.  In that case, a double assignment would cause strange results.

*Ick*! Well, I have not knowingly installed any extra mouse software. I installed Windows 10 and Wacom software and nothing else. (Well, aside from Ps/Lr.) Is there an obvious way to tell if that is the issue?

It could be Wacom software or something tablet-related (like Ink) from MS that enabled itself when you installed the Wacom.  I recommend uninstalling the Wacom and turning off Ink to see if that has any effect.
