Photoshop: Using a mask to define layer Fill amount

What I'd like to see, is an option to switch a specific masks function to represent FILL amount rather than opacity. This would be very handy when working with blending modes such as Color Dodge, whose strength is affected by Fill. You'd then be able to tone down the effect in very specific areas, mainly to protect highlights.

Turns out I just had to do some thinking. The most obvious solution was to use a clipping mask on the color dodge layer and reduce the intensity by painting low opacity black over the desired areas. This also keeps things non-destructive, which was my main problem. Always learning...
