Use Magic Wand Tool on Layer mask in photoshop cc 2014

I just upgraded from CS5.5 to Photoshop 2014 CC and bumbed in to the following error: If I want to use the magic wand tool to select a part of a layer mask I get the popup warning 'Could not use the magic wand because the target is a fill layer.
When I enable 'sample all layers' it will work as in previous versions of PS.

I thnk it is an error to get this pop-up as a mask layer should be able to be threated the same way as a regular layer with any tool, just as in previous versions.

And yes, I do select the mask thumbnail, not the fill layer thumbnail.

Enabling 'Sample all layers' will do the trick for now but I still feel that it shouldn't give the error and just work without this. Because now in some occasions I might need to hide a lot of layers before I can make the right selection this way, as other visible layers might obstruct the area I wish to select with the magic wand.
