Lightroom Classic: Use a Camera Raw Filter when "Edit in Photoshop"

The problem: if I edit a photo in LR then switch to PS I can't change the LR settings without losing the PS changes. For example, I crop an image, then go into PS and remove extraneous objects like tree branches or stray hair (I prefer PS for this, but it could be any change), once I save that edit I can't adjust the crop anymore without losing my PS changes.

Proposed solution: when I select "Edit in PS", instead of exporting the modified image (the RAW with LR adjustments), have the background layer be the original image and apply a Camera RAW Filter so it's more "non destructive" than it is now.

Have you tried using Edit In>Open as a Smart Object instead?
