Updating catalog in Lr CC/ 6

Hi

I am using Lr CC/ 6 and I have just noticed that the following files are in my pictures folder on my mac:

...Pictures > Lightroom > Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.Irdata
...Pictures > Lightroom > Lightroom 5 Catalog .Ircat
...Pictures > Lightroom > Backups > 2014-05-29 1250 > Lightroom 5 Catalog.Ircat

Please could someone let me know why these files are not labelled CC or version 6? And what is the Backups > 2014-05-29 1250 > Lightroom 5 Catalog.Ircat file?

If they are not supposed to be Lr 5 then what should I do next?

(I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013), 2 Ghz Intel core i7, 16 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 RAM)

I am a novice user and need a recipe to help, if things are not ok.

Many Thanks

These are simply file names. You can change them at any time.

In LR 6/CC:
When you create a new catalog, Lightroom prompts you for the file name.
If you upgrade a catalog, Lightroom uses '"original catalog name"-2'.
If no catalog exists and you choose the Default Catalog from the dialog, you will end up with Lightroom Catalog.LRCAT

The name of the catalog has no bearing upon which version of Lightroom it was created for.

These could be remnants of previous versions or they could be active catalogs. Open your Lightroom 6/CC and go to File>Open Recent and it will show your recent catalogs that have been loaded.

Thank you for your answer

I think that the catalog is the active catalogs as I can see all my photos contained in the folders labelled Pictures > 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and also from within Lr CC/ 6.

So should I just go ahead and rename the following catalog files without opening Lightroom? :

"Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.Irdata" with "Lightroom 6 Catalog Previews.Irdata" ? And "Lightroom 5 Catalog.ircat" with "Lightroom 6 Catalog.ircat" ?

Or leave them as they are.

(fyi I looked in the menu under File > Open Recent and the following 3 catalogs were shown : iPhone Photos-2.Ircat, iPhone Photos.Ircat and Lightroom 5 Catalog.Ircat.)

Lastly, I don't remember being offered the chance to upgrade a catalog or to create a new catalog as I moved from Lr 5 to Lr 6 to LR CC/6 as the updates were made - should I do this now using File > New Catalog?

Sorry if I am repeating what you gave me in your advice.

Many thanks

Unless you have a reason, I would say leave them as they are.

Often, I advise my students to name their current active catalog something less ambiguous like ActiveCatalog.LRCAT or Production.LRCAT so that I have a clear indicator of what I am looking at. The previews folder would need to be renamed identically or you would have to rebuild the previews.

I'm working through all the Lr CC information that I can find and didn't have any confidence that I was doing things correctly.

Many thanks.
