Photoshop: Update layer comp with selected layers only

Layer comps are incredibly useful and whenever I mention them to other designers who haven't used them, it's a feature that is always adopted. Added functionality to increase their value would be welcomed.

One addition that would be very useful would be to have two versions of the 'Update Layer Comp' button. One that works as it currently does storing the state of every layer in the document and the other that updates the state of the selected layers only.

Explaining a new feature is always difficult to communicate properly so to give this idea some context I'll explain how it could possibly be used.

You have created a document of a website design with 10 layer comps representing 10 pages of the site. The client requests that the website has another section in the menu. To add this you'd need to adjust the menu that's used across all 10 layer comps. There are a few ways you could go about doing this using Smart Objects however if there was a button which just updated the the layer comp with states of the selected layers you could select the layers used for the menu and simply 'Update Selected Layers Only' across all layer comps. This would mean you wouldn't have to make the same change 10 times across each layer comp saving a great deal of time in most cases.

I hope this makes sense and I'm sure there are other uses too.

I wrote a few scripts for Layer Comps that might help you...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the scripts. They are good scripts for adding layers but unfortunately doesn't help if you simply want to exclude one layer across all layer comps or want the effects for that layer to be the same across all layer comps.

Here's to hoping!

This is a great idea. I'm having problems today because I want to work on different regions of my design as independent concepts. There is the header, a sidebar menu structure with submenus, a central workspace, and a right-side message stack.

With layer comps, I must think of all sorts of combinations, which is cumbersome. And now that I want to change the position of two icons on the header menu, I must update a lot of layer comps. It's a waste of time.

Please Adobe, consider how cool it would be to have the option of allowing a layer comp to apply only to certain layers or grouped elements.
