Lightroom: Unable to Upgrade My Lightroom 3 Catalog to Lightroom 4 - Keep Getting Error

Hello,

I was wondering if someone from Adobe can please help me with my problem.

I have been unable to upgrade my LR3 catalog to LR4. I keep getting an error message at the end of the entire process that says that the catalog cannot be upgraded because of a problem. I've tried upgrading from inside of LR4 (after creating a new LR4 catalog), as well as outside of LR4 (trying to launch with an existing catalog). In both cases, it tries to upgrade my existing LR3 catalog then (re-)launch LR4, but after spending several minutes in the conversion, it craps out just before it goes to launch LR4.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled LR4 2 more times (since the original installation), and rebooted every step of the way. I've also tried exporting my LR3 catalog (from inside LR3), but when I try to use it for LR4, I get an error message telling me that it is not a valid catalog.

I've tried upgrading all of my existing catalog backups (both LR3 and LR2 catalogs), to no avail.

My LR3 catalog works perfectly in LR3, with no issues, what so ever.

I've posted on the Adobe Lightroom blog and forum, but no one from Adobe has jumped in to help. Only a good Samaritan from the outside has tried to help. He pointed me to this feedback forum. So, I'm trying here, in the hopes that someone from Adobe could please help me solve this problem.

I'm not a neophyte who doesn't know what he's doing. I am an expert Lightroom and PC user, with many years of personal experience, and I've made several different types of attempts at trying to solve the problem.

Thanks.

Regards,
Jack

Give us a bit more info. What are the platform details? How, exactly, does it fail when you select an Lr3 catalogue to migrate? Are any of these catalogues on network or externally mounted drive volumes?

Jack, I contacted you privately to obtain a copy of your catalog.

I was able to rebuild my LR4 catalog from an LR3 catalog from 2 years ago. So, far things seem to be OK, except that I lost all of my presets and collections.

Thank you.

Jack
