Why can't I save as a .jpg after loading and editing a .gif file?

How come Photoshop CC (64-bit) doesn't permit me to save my pictuers as .jpg? That is the most common picture format on planet Earth, but photoshop will not let me save as a .jpg if the original picture starts out as a .gif

That's because JPEG only allows RGB, CMYK, or Grayscale images - while GIF is always indexed color. You have to change the image to a mode that JPEG can use before saving as JPEG.
