Trying to upgrade from lightroom 3 to lightroom 5 and lightroom 5 won't run. I downloaded lightroom 5 from adobe and get to the screen that asks if I want a 30 day trial or enter serial number. I select 30 day trial, enter United States as country, click next and get assertion failed error. Then lightroom 64bit has stopped working error. My windows 7 is up to date, video card has latest drivers and ran ccleaner and the error message keeps happening. What do I do next? Thanks

Did you download the Creative Cloud version?

If you have a serial # (perpetual license), you should download from here:

Mac: http://www.adobe.com/go/lightroom_5_u...
Win: http://www.adobe.com/go/lightroom_5_u...

No, I'd rather pay the upgrade fee once rather than pay $10 a month, I got it here. http://www.adobe.com/support/download...
I just uninstalled it and am going to re-install my Lightroom 3 and see if that works.I do have the serial number from 3 so I will try the download link you provided. It's a little different than the one I used. Thanks

Hi Robert, Lightroom 5 is a paid upgrade from Lightroom 3, so it will show a trial unless you purchase it as an upgrade and enter the new serial #. If you just need purchase an upgrade to Lightroom 5, you can get on Adobe.com here:

I am going to buy the upgrade boxed version from B&H as soon as I get the program to run. All I get is an error message when I try to run the program as I mentioned in my original post. I'm preparing my computer to re-install windows 7.
I think that's the only way I can get the program to run. If I just install the new program I imagine that I will be asked for my previous, Lightroom 3, serial number as well as the new serial number for Lightroom 5. Do I need to install Lightroom 3 first before I install the new version? I think that doing so is what caused my current problem. If I don't need to install Lightroom 3 I won't.
I believe that I read somewhere that I need to deactivate Adobe software before using the software on a new computer or a new Windows installation. I neglected to do this before installing Lightroom 5 this time.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

No, you don't need to install Lightroom 3 prior to installing LR 5 - just have your LR3 serial # handy to enter when you install 5.

Lightroom 3 doesn't use activation, so you don't need to deactivate it. If you have Photoshop or other Creative Suite/Creative Cloud software, you should deactivate and/or sign out. Instructions: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/po...
