Sounds like a mouse issue. The lasso continues to draw so long as the mouse button is held down. Likely there is something on the system telling Elements that the button is being released. This could be caused by a physical issue with the mouse (such as loose wiring), a problem with the connection to the computer, faulty mouse drivers, or something in the system interrupting the signal.

If you have another mouse to use, try testing with that to start (especially if you are working with a wireless mouse).

If not, verify the connection of the mouse to the computer (try switching to a different USB port, if your mouse is USB). Make sure you have the latest manufacturer drivers installed (as obtained from the manufacturer's website).

Also, try working in a selective startup (disabled background items), in case an application is interrupting communication.

Letting us know the OS and hardware you are using could help.

Yeah That was right , Lasso tool could not make selection as long as you pressed the mouse click, after releasing the mouse it make selection just by adding start and last point.

Thanks,

Yes, that is how the Lasso tool works, you click-hold-drag. When you let go, the beginning and ending points are joined together. You may want to the Polygonal Lasso or the Magnetic Lasso tools, they may fit more to how you are trying to work.

With the Polygonal Lasso tool you want to click and release, then click and release at a different location (a straight line will connect your first and second clicks). You repeat this until you either click back on your start point or double-click (which connects where ever you are currently at with a straight line to the start point).

Clicking and dragging alone shouldn't cause the behavior you are describing. And you are sure you are not double-clicking?

Hi Brett i am sure iam not double clicking i click drag stop click drag and the lasso competes. I have adjusted the speed of the double click, tried a a usb mouse and tried a bamboo pen and tablet with the same results.
Thanks Pete

OK, taking correct tool usage into account, we next have to look at whether there are any issues with the tool working correctly.

Start by resetting the tool. To do this, click the little arrow near the top left, right above the Move Tool, to the left of the settings for the currently selected tool. When you click the arrow, you will get two options: Reset Tool or Reset All Tools. If the Lasso tool is currently selected, just click Reset Tool.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the entire application. Follow the Restore all preferences to default settings steps here: http://adobe.ly/PS_Prefs (these instructions still work for Elements as well as PSCS5).

Strange. The tools are the exact same between the two products (Photoshop Elements and Photoshop CS5). There really isn't any reason for one to work and the other not to.

There are many possible causes for this, from a bad installation of Elements, to interfering background applications, to user settings. The best option is to proceed through the general troubleshooting documentation:

Windows: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/822/cpsid_82...
Mac: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/824/cpsid_82...
