Elements 13: Trouble Swapping Heads

I have been swapping heads just fine using the lasso tool and copying and pasting onto the image I want to keep, adding a layer mask and then brushing it on and off until it looks right.
Recently I have tried moving two to three people to a different photo using this same technique. When I try to brush away it is leaving weird shadows behind like the Clone tool sometimes does. Is there a better way to do this is my selection to large for the lasso tool? Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I am so frustrated. I have 4 small children so getting everyone too look at once is rare. I need HELP!!

Are you using the standard Brush tool when you're brushing on the mask? (Not the history brush or a clone brush)

Are you painting with black and not a different color?

Is the blend mode for the brush set to "Normal"?

Try resetting to the Tool settings: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...

Thank you so much Jeffrey! I went through all the things you listed and I think my brush was set to a different color. I have been able to fix a couple of pictures that I have been struggling with. I appreciate your help! Melissa
