Tools Lose Functionality

Having a weird issue since the last update. If I'm using the brush tool, it will all of a sudden, without warning, switch to an arrow and I lose all tool functionality. No matter what tool I select from that point, nothing works. A restart of the program fixes it, but this is a huge problem. I can't afford to restart the application every 10 minuets. Any solutions? This is super frustrating.

Hello,

What kind of hardware setup do you have, specifically in terms of keyboard, tablet, mouse, other pointers, etc?

I'm asking this because there is a feature in Photoshop called Springloaded Tools.  What it means is that you can be using one tool, say the Brush, but want to quickly erase something before continuing to paint, so if you PRESS-AND-HOLD the E key for the Eraser, your tool will switch to the Eraser while you hold the E down, and revert to the Brush afterward.

Now, the situation that you're describing is consistent with Photoshop thinking either A or M was being pressed while your Brush was active, switching your Brush to the Move or Path Selection Tool.  So if the driver for one of your input devices is glitching (and that's a surprisingly COMMON complaint we hear), then this all makes sense.

Might be something else, but this is probably the most likely culprit.

Thanks,
David

MacBook Pro is less than a year old. Just using a mouse.

It's switching from the brush tool to the arrow and then not allowing me to switch to any other tool once it changes. Can't use anything else until I restart. This has only happened since the last update. Never happened before.

Seems to happen most when holding down the short key with the brush tool, in order to get a straight line.
