Photoshop CS4: timeline problem when grouping several video layers to a smart object

The usecase here is that I shot a long timelapse movie of the night and sunrise. In order to get as proper exposure as possible with and without the bright full moon I set the camera to spot meter on a part of the sky where the moon wouldn't pass - the old "sky brothers" approach. I did not forsee that some thin and very fast moving streaks of high clouds youd sail on the sky during the night so the whole film is flickering.

The solution I thought of was
1) to bring the video into Photoshop CS4 extended
2) duplicate the layer some times
3) offset these duplicates by 1,2, ... frames on the time line
4) select them all and create a smart object
5) set the smart object Stack Mode to maximum or mean

The problem:
After step 4 has been taken playing the video in Photoshop only renders the first frame from the smart video layers throughout the entire length of the video!
