Lightroom: TIF/JPG Smart Preview metadata sync

Working remotely, I found lightroom treats offline (smart preview files) differently to how it works with them online.

Online: It updates the original file keywords when they're modified automatically
Offline: With smart previews I can continue editing, but when you're back online theres no update made to the original files automatically. It has to be done manually.

I think this needs to :

a) be clearly documented in the Smart Preview pages
b) Ideally, once a folder becomes available again, Lightroom really should update the original files.

Apparently for DNG/RAW files this would happen automatically, so I'm not sure why TIF/JPGs are treated differently.

To be clear, you have "automatically write metadata to XMP" checked in Catalog Settings? And that's why you're expecting the original files to be updated? I'd agree it's a bug if they're not updated when the originals are back online.

Yes I do.

With TIF/JPGs you don't get XMP files. The keyword metadata is written back to the original photo files, I guess as JPG and TIF support keywords within the file.

With RAW/DNG (and with that option ticked), the XMP files would be automatically updated once going back online (I need to test this to confirm but thats what support told me).  But its a different behaviour for JPG/TIF files which to me seems odd and at the least undocumented.
