Photoshop: Thumbtacking Inspiration for drawing

As an illustrator, I often use photo references while drawing in photoshop. I find that placing them directly in the document can be distracting. It would be nice to have a little space to have them next to what I'm doing, so I don't have to toggle back and forth between documents or in the visibility of the layers menu.

Basically, I would like the possibility of placing inspirations next to my drawing board in psd, much like I can in Illustrator or in InDesign. And it would be even greater if I could switch between thumbnail versions and full detail with just a click or a touch of a key.
