I'm using Photoshop CS4 ver 11.0.2. on Windows 8.1 64 bit.

In any document, even a new one, if I enter three dollar signs in a row like this $$$
Photoshop crashes.  Is this an easter egg joke-thing?

Select the text tool.
Click in the document.
Enter $$$
Then try any other operation -- any other operation crashes the program.

A good one, right?

There is no such easter egg for Photoshop which I am aware of.

When you enter the $$$, do you then confirm the type layer?  Does this happen with all fonts?  Does it happen all the time?  When you say "other operation" are you changing tools or executing a menu command or what?  Have you tried resetting your preferences?  Do you have other problems with type?

To be honest, CS4 is a VERY old version and it was never designed for or tested with Win8, which came out half a decade later.  There could be some strange confluence of issues, but even if so, it wouldn't be fixed as CS4 is no longer officially supported, particularly in conjunction with Win8.  The former came out in 2008 and the later in 2013 -- the versions of Photoshop which should be expected to work with Win8 would be CS6 (a little iffy though) or CC.  Five years is a LONG TIME in the realm of software development.  No one would fault Julius Caesar for not planning for rockets or tanks -- similarly, it's not terribly realistic to expect software to run indefinitely using components from different decades.

Hope that helps,

Okay -- I reset my preferences and that fixed it. Back to work.
Thank you for the quick assistance.

As for CS4 not being officially supported, your answer is accepted. CS4 is an old version.
But there have not been any features -- including the CC offerings -- compelling enough to make me want to upgrade.

CS4 x64 is fully able and it runs very, very fast with an SSD and 32GB  RAM
