Photoshop Elements: Holding down mouse button with some tools results in "Program not responding" message

When making a selection with the standard lasso tool, the screen will jump and then the path traced by the lasso does not display from that point on. A "Program not Responding" message displays in the upper left corner of the display. When the mouse button is released, a slection has been made. This behaviour is consistant. Several forums talk about fixes that do not work such as holding down the shift key while using it. Also using it in Vista platform. I am not going to go to that much trouble toswitch to Vista and then incur other problems. Adobe staff can you please comment and give me a fix that will work!
PLEASE

Yep, that's the infamous "10 second bug", a known problem with the software.

The workaround is to first hold down your left mouse button on the area at the bottom that shows the image info.

Keep the mouse button held down for about 10 seconds -- until the Editor gets the "Not Responding" message. Then release the mouse button and the Lasso Tool will work OK.

Either that did not work for me or I don't understand where " the area at the bottom that shows the image info." is. I apologize but I am fairly new to this. Can you please explain how to find "where the image info is. It seemed simple but it didn't work so I am thinking I clicked in the wrong area. Thank you very much for your response.

I am using Photoshop Elements 9. Please see my reply to Ken in the above post regarding "Keep the mouse button held down for about 10 seconds -- until the Editor gets the "Not Responding" message. Then release the mouse button and the Lasso Tool will work OK."
