Photoshop: The Glyph Flyout is annoying

If you're trying to select text, it pops up seemingly intermittently. Clicking text and then pressing shift + left or right to select text stops after a single letter and has a glyph popup.

My idea is to make it so that it doesn't do that. :)

Also, I did find the place to disable it under Preference > Settings > Type, but uh, maybe in the next update just make it disabled by default or reduce the behavior.

Thank you, this was driving me nuts! Pardon my language, but who thought this was a good idea? Editing text in Photoshop is fussy enough as it is.

Shift + left or right arrow will always stop after a single glyph, whether or not there's a popup because it has an alternate. Shift-Cmd/Ctrl + left or right arrow will select the entire word. It won't stop because there's a glyph alternate in the word.

Minion Pro (the default) seems to have a glyph alternate for every letter, but if you select the word with both modifiers and the arrow keys, only the first glyph alternate will reveal itself—also annoying because I find it quicker to find alternates by selecting whole words rather than one glyph at a time. But that is possibly the reason Shift + arrow key selects one letter at a time, and we need another modifier to select an entire word.
