Allows me to maximize contrast without needing to use tone curve and/or go to Photoshop to clip the whites.

I like it too - I use +whites in far more photos than not - it makes the highlights look better. If need be, -exposure -highlights +shadows to make room for +whites...

Clip handling/roll-off... is nicely done, and combined with additional local -highlight application, one can have much larger doses than one might expect...

In a nutshell - to me, highlights in Lr4, with whites=0 can be a little dull-looking, but +whites undullifies them.

-whites can be useful too, occasionally...
