Here's a quick video:
http://screencast.com/t/Z2gxcZKe2GZ and another http://screencast.com/t/ffj0LtlVL
(keep an eye on the site's navigation in the top left)

In certain files I get strange artifacts. They can manifest in a few ways, but this specific problem has the following symptoms:
- the text is picking up a weird color, in a weird pattern
- showing/hiding layers or reordering them will give the text a different, random pattern (as you can see in the screencast above)

No, nothing is selected. Changing the text color works but only sometimes. and transforming the text will, oddly, keep the weird colors.

Also, when this problem shows up, the Move Tool's Auto Select by Layer doesn't work at all.

something I noticed:
http://screencast.com/t/l32CM7Iq1v4

it says my layer is Alpha/8 and other layers are RGB/8. I'm not sure when it got set like this, but could that be the cause?

Can I change it out of this mode?

It might be, and it's displaying the mask of the alpha channel. Open your Channels panel, and see what it says.
