Lightroom: Files won't rename with capture date.

I have a significant problem which is stopping me before i even start to use lightroom.

I am digitising and archving photos, including recently shot CR2 files, and so i want to rename the files as i import them with the capture date (which is present and correct in the metadata).
But during import, despite trying every combination of date field in the "file rename" dialogue box, i am unable to rename the files with anything other than the import date. i.e. 'today'. The resulting files still have the caputre date intact in the metadata, but lightroom simply will not read that and rename the files accordingly.

I have tried it with different files from different cameras, have reinstalled Lightroom 4.3, but STILL having the same problem.

Please, please PLEASE help me before i go completely bald!

Best

Jim

Never heard of that before.
Either your metadata is not that healthy or there's a big bug in LR.

Can you upload one of those files?

Presumably, it's a bug in Lr - consider following the link Jim posted - plenty of info there, and more links...

I can import same files using same template as Jim without having the same problem, so it seems system dependent. It is not unique to OS though (e.g. Ian Lyons has same problem on Windows *and* Mac).

I am having the exact same problem with LR5. I used to do it and had no problem renaming files with capture date (as opposed to today's date). My computer recently crashed, and we bought a new one,. I re-installed Lightroom 5.6, and now my presets have disappeared but there is no way I can make this date correspond to the shooting date when creating a customized rename template.
So it seems system dependent. yest i have Windows 8 now (was 7 before), but i am not sure this is the issue because it also works on my laptop with Windows 7.

I'm just trying lightroom and having the same issue with LR 5.6 and 5.7 on windows 7. It just seem so basic. Even free tools allow to do this !!
If you have to use several tools to make all your workflow, I don't really see the value of lightroom anymore.
If find Lightroom a very good tools but as long as such basic things are not working, I won't buy it.

Hi Philippe, and others. I have been unable to reproduce this problem. One thing that might help is to know where you're importing the photos from. A camera card in a card reader? From the camera itself, attached directly to your computer? From an internal hard drive? From network attached storage? Etc., etc.

In the meantime, those who have had this problem report that renaming by capture date works fine if they do it after import, rather than at the time of import, so I suggest that as a workaround for the moment. After importing, select all the photos you wish to rename, and go to Library>Rename Photos...

Thanks,
Ben

I cannot find an option to rename by capture date either on import or after import. It isn't listed as a metadata option or as a preset option. The only date that will show up is today's date. I am working on Windows 8.1 / Lightroom 5.7

in my case, only the preview in the renaming field of the import window is wrong (todays date).
the actual file is renamed correctly (creation date).
