Hi Clive,

Not a lot to go on here. Can you be much, much more specific about what you're doing?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben

I import photographs into a folder on a secondary hard drive, Digital In 2011, inside this folder they are put into a dated folder and inside this folder they are put into a sub folder with the job name.

eg Digital IN>19072011>Road Safety Event

I do this using Photo Mechanics which at the same time renames the files and add my IPTC and caption info.

I know LR can rename and caption but I can't get it to put files into my folder structure. I know it can import into 2011>sub folder > then dated folder.

I want to import 2011>dated folder>sub folder.

If it did this and play the sound files it could replace photo mechanics. (PM)

At moment I import with PM then sync the LR catalog, this takes a long time because even though I only add 100+ photos, LR always finds 2000+ to sync.

Thanks
Clive

Hi Clive,

True, Lightroom will not build the organizational structure you describe. And if you're talking about importing and managing, say, MP3 files, no, Lightroom won't do that either. But if, when you say "play the sound files" you're referring to audio notations recorded on camera along with the photo, Lightroom will do that. Select the photo in question, and select "EXIF and IPTC" from the pop-up menu in the header in the Metadata panel in the Library module. If the selected photo has an audio sidecar file, it will be displayed in the Metadata panel with a button next to it. If you click the button, the audio will play.

Regarding your question, I'm still not sure what the issue is. If you select a folder in Lightroom and right-click it and choose "Synchronize Folder..." Lightroom will present you with the Synchronize Folder dialog. If there are 100 photos in the folder that are not in Lightroom, the dialog will give you the option "Import new photos (100)." If there are 2,000 photos in the folder that are not in Lightroom, the dialog will give you the option "Import new photos (2,000)."

Are you saying that the folder in question only contains 100 photos that aren't in Lightroom, and yet Lightroom thinks there are 2,000? If so, does the folder in question contain only 100 photos? Or does it contain 2,000 photos, 1,900 of which are already in Lightroom, but Lightroom mistakenly thinks they're not? What happens when you select the "Import new photos (2,000)" checkbox and click "Synchronize?" What version of Lightroom are you using? What OS?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben
Thanks for the info on the sound files, it makes it a step closer to complete.

I'll explain my sync process.

I import via PM into a Digital In 2011 >dated folder>sub named folder.

I then go to light room and ask it to sync the digital in 2011 folder.
I do this to add the folder created in the PM import.

Every time I go through this sync and may have only added 10, 110 or 510 images. LR always finds an extra 1900 to 2000 images to sync.

I tried rebuilding the catalog, I tried making a new catalog but have the same problem. (on a side note making a new catalog lost all the rating and adjustments I had made to the images)

I'm using a mac quad core 10.5.8

Assuming those photos are indeed in the folder you have told it to sync, just import the 2000 - it won't hurt Lightroom. Next time you sync that folder you will only be prompted to import any new pictures. Lightroom is behaving exactly as it should.

If they are in a folder other than the one you've tried to sync, then there is a problem. Is this what's happening?

they are in the folder I'm trying to sync, they never import with the new photos.

I don't know what photos they are.
