Lightroom desktop: Sync Bug - 100% reproduceable

In the following situation, changes made on LR CC on the desk top are not sync'd up to the cloud.


  • Configure LR to store the originals locally, but on a removable disk
  • Remove the disk so that LR cannot save the originals anymore
  • Upload a pic via some other application such as LR mobile
  • The pic will become available for editing in LR CC even though the sync is disrupted due to the disk being disconnected
  • If you edit the pic, the edits do not become available to other applications

You might think, "well that's ok, once you plug the disk back in, it will all be sorted out" but the problem is this:

When I'm away, I take my laptop with me, but not the 'master disk'. I upload pics to the cloud via my laptop and phone. But the edits are not synchronised due to me not having the master disk with me. 

I don't see any reason why it should work like this. Whilst LR can't see the master store, it should just work as if you haven't selected the "store masters locally' option.

  • annoyed that Adobe still haven't worked out their sync strategy. This another thing ontop of some very major sync failings

Ok, I had to remove my previous comments as it occurred to me I was answering as in a Lightroom Classic problem, but somehow I was looking at Lightroom (Cloud POS) problems.

BUT, did you mean for this to actually be in the Lightroom Classic problems.

Ok, for Lightroom Classic, to work on photos that were added to a catalog, but are currently not available as in on a disconnected external drive, requires use of Smart Previews. Are you using Smart Previews?

And when you go to export them, those original photos must be available, that external hard drive must be connected.

Yep, I meant for this to be on Lightroom CC, not Classic.

I'm not able to reproduce this behaviour. When I follow your steps I do see the edits syncing to other devices....after adding some images on my tablet and when they had arrived in Lightroom Desktop, I edited one in the Desktop app, and that change synced to my tablet. I then edited another on the tablet and that change synced back to the Desktop app....all the while I have an "Unsynced Offline Drive" status error in the Desktop app.

I can't explain why you are having trouble, the only vague thought is that edits do not sync until the specific edited image is no longer selected....that's the same on both the Desktop and Mobile apps. After making the edits to an image, are you then moving away from that image to allow the changes to sync?
