Lightroom: How do I switch library photo access to duplicate photos on external hard drive?

My hard drive contains about 1.5 TB of photos . I have exact duplicate of these photos on an external hard drive. Now I would like to free up space on my computer hard drive by having LR catalogue access the photos on my external hard drive so I can delete the photos on my computer hard drive.
I have tried deleting a folder on my computer hard drive (with windows explorer) and then having LR find the folder on my external drive .Unfortunately the folder no longer appears in the list of folders in lightroom . I expected it to show up with a question mark. When I try to import it from my external drive the photos are grayed out as if they are already imported but I cannot find them .

I am considering erasing all the photos on the external drive and then moving the photos in lightroom to the external drive but am concerned about the time involved and the possibility of losing my photos or their link to LR Catalog in the process..
Amy help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've told LR to find it on a different drive, it'd show up in a separate volume in the Folders panel. They're collapsed by default so you might not have spotted it.
