Lightroom: Suggestions from a former Aperture user for import and export

I have recently switched from Apple's Aperture to Lightroom. I used Aperture because the interface for managing workflow was so much better. Although the switch has gone pretty good there are a couple things I have noticed that could easily be fixed and make the program much better.

First, on import it would be wonderful if the import screen would include a few metadata fields that could be changed on the fly on import. The title field and the comment field should be available all the time. It might even be nice to have the option to add metadata fields to the import screen under Apply During Import. The presets are nice for things that are static, like the copyright information. But a number of the fields would be different from shoot to shoot for many.

The second huge issue is for the export presets. A lot of the features in the presets are very nice. The one that is a major lapse is the ability to have the export preset query every time for filename, or at least a portion of it. It would be nice to have a field to add to the name that would be "prompt for info" that could be added at the time of export. Currently my workaround is to give a title to all the photos and then have the export preset use title as part of the filename on export. But that means I have to change the title if I ever want to use a different filename for the export. That happens from time to time. It also means I have to apply title after import, or keep changing my import preset to apply the title to the metadata.

For metadata that is different for each image, what is the workflow advantage between applying it during the import step, or once it is in the catalog? You could consider using PhotoMechanic, which makes lightroom look pretty slow, and has a robust metadata entry system.

I would not call your export issue huge. It sounds pretty minor to questionable to me. The whole reason for metadata fields is to solve these types of problem as you have by using the title field. In addition to title, you have caption, headline and instructions. Optionally you can just type what you want into the filename template editor each time you export.

The metadata on import is for each group of images not each image. The idea is that there are some things that will be common for all the images of a particular shoot. So it would be nice to put that in for all of them at the time of import instead of having to take and then select all the images in library mode and apply the metadata information. As mentioned, title would be one possible field, but there very well could be others depending on the photographer and their needs. I also should not need to use a third party program to import the photos into Lightroom.

For the export it is a huge frustration. I either have to go in and modify the export preset every time I want to use it so that it will name the photos properly for that export, or I have to use something like title and then apply that, which I would also then have to adjust every time I export and want a different filename. I often will export images from the same set with different needs and thus different filenames. And if I edit the export preset then I cannot use several of the menus like the right click and export using preset because I cannot edit the preset using those menus. It would be so easy for the programers to put in a query field so it would prompt me on export for that portion of the filename.

It is just as easy, or even easier to enter the metadata after import, so I don't understand your issue here. Perhaps you should adjust your thinking to how lightroom was designed to work.

Perhaps if you describe carefully a use case for your export needs we can help you with an efficient workflow.
