Strange behavior for color picker with layer mask

Yesterday I noticed a strange behavior while using the color picker I only got white and black colors, not at all what I expected to see. I finally noticed that a layer mask was selected and figured out it was actually picking up the colors from the layer mask instead. I really don't understand the sense of this functionality, if I actually were editing the layer mask or if the layer mask was rubylith, then it would make sense. Sometimes when you have adjustment layers on the top of the layer list it's quite easy to mistakenly select the layer mask instead of the actual adjustment layer. Now to my question, does it exist any setting to change this behavior? If it doesn't it should probably be an option on the color picker tool.

You can try: Adjustments panel > flyout menu > disable "Add mask by default" ...and that's probably all you can do.  Or maybe some hardcore hacks with script event listener.

The use case for this is that you can Alt + Click layer mask and at this point you see mask only so it might make sense that color picker gets color from mask. But I have same experience... it slows down my work. Because it is confusing.
