Straighten Tool in PE9 for Mac is very poor

The straighten tool in PE9 for Mac works poorly. Either the effect is minimal or zero. I read PE9 Missing Manual for help with this program, but to no avail on this problem.
I was directed to use the custom rotate tool and it will work, but it is tedious as you have to type in a number, click to try, then repeat, repeat, repeat until things are correct. This tool should be on a slider that gives instantaneous correction that can be monitored. IN FACT, the straighten tool in Picasa works exactly that way. It is far superior to doing this with PE9 (and the program is free!).

Thank you for this suggestion. It does work well. And as far as I can tell, this feature of free transform is not in the PE9 missing manual.
A thought I had when viewing your example is that the images I've been trying to straighten are only slightly off horizontal (unlike your example). Nevertheless, the Picasa straighten tool works great for those.
I've attached an image that won't easily straighten using the PE9 tool.

And what happens (with the Straighten tool) is that the waterline barely moves, even with repeated attempts, and then may even start to tilt in the wrong direction. I actually haven't ever achieved what I wanted with the tool (though I was unwillingly to try the procedure for than about 10 times).

To me, this is a pretty straightforward example. There is only 1 main horizontal line. The program should not be confused as to what needs straightening.

The tool appears to be of little value.

Free transform is what works for me. Thanks again for your help. I'm not considering this problem solved, but I am glad I have a decent workaround.

VOILA!
Resetting preferences did the trick, pretty much!
Now it took about 4 attempts, but each attempt progressively improved the horizontal until it finally arrived where I wanted it. This is WAY better than before!
AND,
Now my second complaint about "Poor Redeye Correction" is also solved. Now PE9 fixes red eyes cleanly and immediately. This is a big, big improvement for my use of this program.
Thanks for sticking with me on this problem!
