Stacking operations greatly slow down and then crash LR 5

I've been making a first pass over a couple thousand pics in Library mode, stacking many into groups of 2, 3, and 4 pics. After many stacking operations, LR 5 starts slowing down intolerably and eventually crashes.

To replicate:

1. Create a catalog with 256 JPEGs from one folder. Select that folder as the source.

2. Start stacking pairs of pics. (Right-arrow, shift-right-arrow, CTRL-G, repeat.)

3. After 48 stack operations (stacking 96 pics), it takes 40 seconds to do Full Screen And Hide Panels.

3. On the 57th stack operation (after 112 pics have already been stacked), LR crashes.

Memory consumption goes up slowly, but at the time of crash, the process is using only about 720 MB of VM.

LR 5.2RC greatly improves this, LR doesn't crash, even after 128 stacking operations. The Full Screen And Hide Panels does slow down a fair bit, though.

Is there a way to disable stacking completely, such as when creating new virtual copies?
